Description

Alonsoa warscewiczii 'Starlets', also known as Alonsoa meridionalis, is a frost-tender perennial plant native to South America, grown as an annual. Little known, it forms a fairly compact clump of dark green foliage covered from June to the first frosts with a mix of scarlet red and soft pink flowers. Its slightly old-fashioned-looking flowers are stunning in borders, cottage gardens, or containers. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils in full sun. Flowering occurs 4 months after sowing.

Alonsoa warscewiczii is a non-hardy perennial plant, belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family. It is one of the 12 species in the Alonsoa genus. Native to Chile and Peru, this herbaceous perennial plant forms an erect, bushy clump measuring 40 to 50 cm in all directions. Its dark green, ovate to lanceolate, toothed leaves emerge from angular, reddish stems. From June to October, it bears clusters of five-lobed flowers in various shades of red and pink, with beautiful golden yellow stamens at the centre.

Rapid-growing Alonsoa warscewiczii 'Starlets' thrives in sunny or partially shaded locations and well-drained soils that retain some moisture. Its compact, bushy habit makes it ideal for borders and the front of flower beds. It also does well in containers with regular watering. It pairs beautifully with Diascias and Convolvulus tricolor or Morning Glorys.

Caution, seeds for experienced gardeners accustomed to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow your Alonsoa warscewiczii Starlets seeds from early February to mid-April in good soil barely covering the seeds with a very fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Germination takes 14 to 21 days at 18-20°C. Light promotes germination, warmth is essential. It may be useful to enclose the sowing in a polythene bag.

When they are sufficiently developed to be handled, transplant the seedlings into 7.5 cm pots and grow them in a cooler environment, repotting if necessary. For outdoor planting, gradually acclimatise the young plants to outdoor conditions and transplant them at the end of spring, after the frosts. Space them 30 cm apart. Choose a sunny location, sheltered exposure, and plant in moist, well-drained soil.
