Description

The Daisy or Bellis perennis 'Habanera Mix' offers a mix of bright colours. These little daisies are essential for bringing cheer in spring, with their early, double, and slightly ruffled pompoms. They come in cheerful colours such as white, pink, and red. This hardy and floriferous biennial is ideal for planters and borders, where it fits in perfectly among spring bulbs.

Bellis perennis means "eternal beauties" and symbolises the Virgin Mary. In the language of flowers, they represent innocence and attachment. It is true that their childish and fun side heralds the much-awaited spring. Originally a perennial, used as a biennial preferring moist but well-drained soil. Its size (15 cm) allows it to slip in at the edge of a border, in front of daffodils, jonquils, and tulips, but you can also find a place for it among grape hyacinths and forget-me-nots in pots and planters. 'Habanera Mix' develops a rosette of dark green leaves, from which several hairy stems emerge, carrying at their top a single head. These pompoms are very double, rounded, with curled petals, positioned very densely, with an impressive geometric regularity. Its salmon colour is rare among daisies. You can even taste them, as daisy petals are edible; so sprinkle your first salads with these colourful little petals.

Bellis perennis 'Habanera Mix' is a spring flower, cheerful, not as plain as the species and of low height, which beautifies gardens from February to May. Its cheerful colours work wonders in containers placed near the house, where it blends with the shades of pansies. You can also use it to soften the colours of certain tulips by interplanting in your borders. Its flowers are charming as a carpet, but also in the company of other smaller flowering plants or bushy foliage. Remove faded flowers to encourage them to bloom again.

Planting and care

The Habanera Mix daisy blend is sown in summer, like biennials. The seeds will prefer temperatures between 15 and 20 °C, so you can sow them outdoors or under a properly ventilated shelter. They will germinate between 7 and 21 days, depending on the conditions.

Sow by broadcasting in a tray or pots filled with potting soil mixed with a little sand or vermiculite, cover with a light layer of substrate and keep it moist. In October, the young plants can be pricked out and planted in flower beds or in planters. In both cases, you can also plant your spring bulbs between the plants. Watch out for snails and slugs that are fond of the young shoots of these daisies.
