Description

Gaillardia aristata is a plant from the Asteraceae family that is found in the large, sunny prairies of North, South and Central America. It is a highly appreciated perennial for its warm colours and frugal nature.

Blanket Flower has a very stately demeanour with its height of 60 to 70 cm and its width of 25 cm. The stems carry one solitary flower that looks like a warm coloured daisy. The central disc florets are imperceptibly downy and take on ochre-brown colour. The ray florets that make up the flower’s collar are scarlet at their base and saffron yellow at their two-toothed tips. Depending on the cultivar, the proportion or yellow and red varies and gives a dominant colouring that you can enjoy from June to September. Its slightly downy and deciduous foliage takes on hints of grey-green colour.

Blanket flower likes light, well-drained, rich soils. It is best planted in the sun. Combine it with Leucanthemum or white Scabious. This will create a contrast between the cooler tones of the white daisy and the fieriness of the scarlet and yellow Gaillardia. Each one will seem to glow even brighter.
