Description

The Globe Amaranth or Gomphrena globosa 'Lavender Lady', also known as Amaranthoid, is an excellent annual flower for fresh or dried bouquets. It stands out for its graceful globes in pink with a hint of blue, blooming in lavender pink. This plant requires virtually no care. It tolerates heat and drought and produces lovely flowers. It brings life to flower beds from July to September with its architectural presence and can be used to create bouquets, extending the season by drying them.

Globe Amaranth is best in borders. Due to its habit, its effect will be more pronounced when planted in groups. Each plant has multiple stems, each bearing a single globe-shaped flower at the top. The lanceolate and elongated leaves are rather small (5 cm) and sit close to the stem (they are said to be sessile). The visual impact is therefore achieved by several plants. The plant can reach 50 cm in height when flowering. Its varied colours, in purple, pink, and white, complemented by slightly bluish-green foliage with a hint of grey, naturally fit into a colour scheme, but can also brighten up a more neutral background. Gomphrena globosa, native to Central America, prefers a sunny exposure.

The architectural Globe Amaranth is a plant that can be scattered among other annuals or perennials. Its numerous round heads create unity in a diverse flower bed. Pair them with cosmos, lavenders, or daisies, for example. Alternatively, plant them en masse in various colours. They also make beautiful vegetable garden flowers. They attract pollinating insects, particularly butterflies.

Like some of its relatives in the Amaranthaceae family, you can use it in dried arrangements. Indeed, in Greek Amaranthus means: "that does not fade". To keep them looking their best, cut them as soon as the flowers appear and start to colour; this way, they will retain their shape and evocative colour.

Planting and care

Amaranthus Lavender Lady is best sown under cover in a seed tray from March. Just cover the seeds with a thin layer of substrate kept slightly moist. When the seedlings are large enough to be moved, you can separate them and put them in pots if the frost period is not over and keep them warm. Otherwise, you can plant them in the ground spacing them 30 cm apart. Watering will only be necessary in case of drought during the first weeks after planting.
