Description

Organic Lavatera trimestris 'Mont Blanc', also known as Annual Mallow, is a floriferous plant native to Mediterranean regions. This variety is distinguished by its large, satin-white flowers, elegant and bright.

The 'Mont Blanc' Lavatera is a horticultural selection. The wild species, Lavatera trimestris, from the Malvaceae family, is native to the Mediterranean basin. Naturally growing in rocky areas and along the coast, it is appreciated for its large cup-shaped pink flowers and bushy habit. It has spread to temperate regions for its ornamental qualities and ease of cultivation. Lavatera trimestris is an annual plant, meaning it completes its life cycle in a single season, from germination to seed production, before dying.

'Mont Blanc' Lavatera features large, wide corolla, pure white flowers, measuring 8-10 cm in diameter. They appear, solitary, in the axils of the leaves. The satin-textured petals show very slight veining. This particularly floriferous Mallow variety flowers from July to October. Its medium green leaves are palmate and lobed. The very bushy plant will reach 60 cm to 1 m in height and more, if it thrives.

The Annual Lavatera 'Mont Blanc' loves the sun as well as light, well-drained soils. Paired with Poet's Carnations, Dwarf Roses or Bushy Sages, it will bring a touch of poetry to your borders or beds. In a countryside style, associate it with Yarrows and Catmints. Regularly remove faded flowers to promote reblooming. It would be a shame not to fully enjoy its remarkably long flowering period!

Planting and care

Sow the Mont Blanc organic lavatera seeds in a warm greenhouse from March to May by burying the seed under 1 cm of soil, then transplant every 30 cm, or sow directly in place from May to June when the soil is well warmed up. Ideally, the temperature should be around 18°C to ensure optimal germination. You will need to wait about 14 days to see the first shoots emerge. The annual Lavatera thrives in light, well-drained soils. Choose sunny locations for it, preferably sheltered from the wind. Ensure that the soil is adequately drained, as stagnant moisture can cause its roots to rot.
