Description
Large-leaved purslane or Portulaca grandiflora 'Single Mix' is a selection of vibrant colours bringing an exotic touch to gardens and pots. Its corollas bloom on a small plant with a low, carpeting, even trailing habit, ideal for rockeries and summer compositions. This annual with succulent foliage stands out for its great resistance to drought and sea spray, and thrives in all types of soil, making its cultivation particularly easy. Flowering all summer, it enlivens any setting with vivid hues mixing red, fuchsia, pale yellow or golden. It is perfect as ground cover for rockeries, but also in hanging baskets and containers in full sun.
Portulaca grandiflora 'Single Mix' belongs to the purslane family. Its ancestor, the large-flowered purslane is a tender herbaceous annual plant native to semi-desert areas in South America. It is a sun-loving species well adapted to hot locations and poor soils, particularly dry in summer. However, it does not tolerate frost.
Plants from the portulaca 'Single Mix' blend quickly form a prostrate clump of reddish, creeping and branching stems, reaching about 15 cm in height with a spread of 30 to 40 cm. The cylindrical, thick, succulent stems bear clusters of small, elongated, lanceolate and fleshy leaves, of a fairly light green hue, measuring 1.5 to 2 cm long. Flowering occurs from June until September. The 2.5 to 3.5 cm diameter flowers consist of 5 slightly crumpled bristly petals surrounding a beautiful cluster of yellow stamens. They require full sun to flourish. The corollas appear to be placed on a carpet of moss. This is what earned the purslane its name of "Rose Moss". The drier the summer, the more the Purslane blooms.
The 'Single Mix' purslane is best planted in rockeries, edging, hanging baskets or containers, alone or in combination with other annual flowers. In large groups or small touches, this undemanding and cheerful plant brings life to any sunny corner, without requiring much maintenance. Its semi-trailing habit makes it an excellent ephemeral ground cover, perfect for borders and flower beds with plants suitable for dry soils. It particularly complements lavenders, sedums, oregano and California poppies for a harmonious ensemble.

Planting and care
Sow large flowered Purslane Single Mix from February to April in a seed tray. Use good quality soil sieved on the surface to bind the seed to its substrate. Before sowing, lightly press the soil with a board. Sow your seeds by broadcasting. Cover the seeds by sprinkling with soil or vermiculite, lightly press and water generously with a fine rain. Place your seed tray in the light, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 18 to 21°C. Lower the temperature at night to 16°C to create a beneficial alternation for germination.
The seeds will germinate in 7 to 14 days. As soon as the plants are manageable, transplant them into 7 cm pots. Keep the soil moist, but not excessively during growth. Then, 15 days before their final placement, start acclimatising them gradually to a temperature of 15°C.
After the last frosts, you can plant your young plants outside, in open ground or in pots. Choose a sunny location. Add a good shovelful of soil to each planting hole. Space your plants 30 cm apart.
Regularly remove faded flowers to maintain beauty and promote the production of new flowers.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
