Description

Saponaria officinalis 'Graciella White' is a variety of common soapwort with single white flowers that can bloom in the year of sowing. It is a robust perennial with a rustic charm, ideal for a natural garden. It blooms abundantly for a long time in summer, with a cloud of slightly fragrant flowers. It is a graceful, simple plant, very hardy and long-lasting, appreciated for cutting as well as in the garden. Common soapwort can self-seed abundantly where it thrives, in moist soil.

Saponaria officinalis, also known as soapwort or soap herb, is a herbaceous perennial plant in the family Caryophyllaceae, native to Europe and Asia. This wild plant is frequently found in the countryside, along paths, in ditches, and near watercourses. The 'Graciella White' selection stands out for its particularly fast growth. The plant, with running rhizomes, forms dense, slightly loose clumps that spread over time, especially in rich and moist soil. This plant will reach a height of about 60 cm and a minimum width of 50 cm. The upright or slightly prostrate stems bear slightly fragrant white flowers resembling those of phlox gathered in dense clusters above the foliage from July to September. The bright green leaves are arranged opposite on the stem, they are ovate, pointed, and deeply marked by 3 longitudinal veins. The above-ground deciduous vegetation emerges in spring and dries up in autumn.

The 'Graciella White' common soapwort is charming when planted in groups in a natural-looking garden, but it is not suitable for small spaces. It can be grown in a large flower border or a rustic bed with pretty wildflowers such as Goat's Rue, Pyramidal Bellflower, Dame's Rocket... It will also thrive alongside other sturdy plants such as Persicaria, Willowherbs, Veronicastrum... Also, shade stops its growth as surely as a weedkiller.

Planting and care

Sowing directly in spring or autumn in well-prepared, refined soil, cleared of "weeds". The seeds germinate at a temperature of about 15°C.

Autumn sowing: soak the seeds in water for three days and sow at a shallow depth directly outside. Mark the sowing area well.

Spring sowing can be done in the same way, but it will be necessary to keep the seeds cold (possibly in the refrigerator) over winter.

Cultivation:

Officinal saponarias are very easy to cultivate plants, which all prefer soils that remain slightly moist under the summer sun. These plants prefer rich soils. For classic flower beds, it is bestter not to grow them in too moist soil, where they can become a bit invasive. Also, note that shade stops their growth as surely as a weedkiller.
