Verbena bonariensis Vanity - seeds

The 'Vanity' Verbena bonariensis is distinguished by its stems which are shorter than Verbena bonariensis species, forming a dense and compact clump. Its clusters of deep blue-violet flowers bloom from June until autumn frost. They attract a large number of butterflies, providing a lively spectacle over a long period. 'Vanity' is perfect for natural, romantic, or country compositions as well as in pots on the terrace or patio. This verbena is not very hardy and has a limited lifespan, but it self-seeds easily. It is drought and disease resistant, and prefers light and sunny soils.

Verbena bonariensis, also known as Buenos Aires Verbena or Argentine Verbena, is a perennial plant with rigid, upright branches, often grown as an annual, belonging to the Verbenaceae family. It is native to South America and sometimes considered a weed in Brazil and Argentina. However, in Europe, it is highly valued for flowering in even dry and poor soils. Despite its tropical origin, this plant is surprisingly hardy and can withstand more challenging conditions.

The 'Vanity' variety is a very recent horticultural selection by Van Hemert & Co, a Dutch seed company. In 2022, it received the Fleuroselect gold medal in Europe, and the All-America Selections gold medal in the United States. The 'Vanity' verbena bonariensis is a compact variety, measuring 60 to 80 cm (24 to 32in) high when in bloom, with a spread of 40 to 60 cm (16 to 24in). It starts by forming a basal rosette with narrow, crenate, and rough green leaves. Then, it develops many short, square, and rigid stems. These stems bear pairs of narrow, opposite leaves spaced by short internodes, with symmetrical branching that develops at the leaf axils. This plant has a regular and airy structure, where the stems are more prominent than the foliage. From late June, round inflorescences appear, measuring 3 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, composed of numerous tiny, tubular, dark violet flowers with purple bracts. It is subtly fragrant, especially in the early morning and evening and attracts many pollinating insects (bees, hoverflies, butterflies, etc.). The flowering is continuous and remains constant until October. In well-drained soil, it can withstand brief frosts down to -8°C (17.6°F). Although its lifespan is relatively short, the 'Vanity' verbena produces many seeds that easily germinate in light soil. However, it is important to note that seed-grown plants may show variations compared to the parent plant.

The 'Vanity' verbena bonariensis is perfect for bordering flower beds, rock gardens, or pots on the terrace, and can also be used for cutting. It can be paired with Gauras, bushy salvias, Cosmos, or low or medium height ornamental grasses for a contemporary look. It pairs well with the vibrant blooms of peonies and ground cover roses in a flower bed. Another option to fully enjoy its long flowering period is to grow it in a large pot or container. It will adapt perfectly to add a touch of colour and lightness to the terrace or balcony.
