Description

The McKana hybrid Columbine, also known as Giant Flowered Columbine (or, in Latin, Aquilegia x cultorum McKana), is a perennial plant that is very easy to grow and thrives in moist soil and sunny exposure. Its abundant and elegant flowers, which are said to resemble grandmothers' bonnets, occurs from June to August. These large flowers (+/- 10 cm (3.9 in)) are adorned with spurs and are either monocoloured or bicoloured: white, yellow, blue, red, and pink are frequently encountered.

This horticultural creation has been known since the Middle Ages. Very hardy, this columbine is not afraid of winter cold, but its foliage will almost completely disappear in winter.

The elegant clusters of flowers emerge from the slightly bluish-green foliage and reach a height of 70 cm (27.6 in). They can be used to create beautiful airy bouquets. Giant Columbines are ideal plants for creating an English-style flower bed, where their flowers will resemble a kaleidoscope of butterflies.

Planting and care

Sowing can be done from March-April under shelters (at 18 °C (64.4 °F)) or in the garden in May-June. It will take about 21 days to see the young shoots appear. Young columbines grown under shelter will need to be gradually acclimatised to the outside temperature before being planted in flower beds. Those grown directly in flower beds can be transplanted at a good distance (30 cm (11.8 in)) when the seedlings reach a size of +/- 10 cm (3.9 in). Remove faded flowers if you do not want spontaneous sowing.
