Description

The 'Carmine King' California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is a perennial or annual plant remarkable for its bright flowers with changing colours and its delicate bluish foliage. This old variety, already distributed by the best English seedsmen as early as 1931, has a great impact in sunny flower beds and borders. When planted en masse, its flowers create a very beautiful multicoloured effect.

The 'Carmine King' California Poppy is a horticultural selection. This plant comes from Eschscholzia californica, from the Papaveraceae family, native to the arid regions of the western United States. Its natural habitat is meadows in semi-desert areas, where it abundantly grows under a dry climate. The 'Carmine King' variety, with a rather compact habit, reaches about 40 cm in height when flowering. It has abundant, finely cut, bluish-greyish green foliage, theoretically evergreen in winter where the plant survives frosts.

The flowers of the 'Carmine King' California Poppy, which appear from spring to summer, are a real spectacle. The flowering period depends on the sowing date and the climate, but it renews itself for several weeks. The petals, with a satin texture, are bicoloured. Initially bright red, they gradually evolve towards a carmine pink, while their base displays cream yellow, pale pink and rosy white tones. The flowers catch the eye, their colours changing over time create a beautiful multicoloured effect. The flowering is generous, and although each flower is ephemeral, the plant continuously produces them throughout the season.

Sow the 'Carmine King' California Poppy directly in flower beds, borders and rockeries where its flowering brings a touch of vivid and bright colour. This variety fits into different types of gardens, rustic, country-style or more formal. Sow it among 'Hidcote Lavender', Gaura Lindheimeri 'Whirling Butterflies', Salvia Nemorosa 'Caradonna' and Coreopsis Verticillata 'Moonbeam' for example.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds of Eschscholzia californica 'Carmine King' directly in place from March to May or September-October, the seeds will overwinter without damage. Sowings done in autumn will bloom in spring. Choose a very sunny spot, in any poor and well-drained, well loosened soil. Bury the seeds to a depth of 1 cm, in small holes spaced 15 cm apart. Cover the seeds so they do not receive any light. Water regularly, keeping the soil moist, especially during dry periods. Germination generally takes 14 to 21 days. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, space the plants 15 cm apart.

You can also sow Californian poppies indoors from February to March at a temperature of 15-21 ° C. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into pots and grow them cool until the plants are large enough to be planted outside.

Cultivation:

These plants require full sun, and well-drained, sandy or rocky soil. The soil they are planted in should be poor. In too rich soil, the plant becomes too big, eventually tipping over. In the garden, it thrives in the most challenging situations, as long as it is exposed to sunlight: gravel, a rockery filled with stones or a dry bank. They can also be successfully grown in pots and containers. Due to their taproot, these poppies do not like to be moved, which is why it is best to sow them in place.
