Description

The Queen Marguerite 'Madeleine' single Mix is a mixture of China Asters, in Latin Callistephus chinensis. This assortment of "single" flower varieties showcases a range of vibrant and diverse colours. With strong stems and good durability, these plants are charming in flower beds and produce excellent cut flowers. China Asters can be sown under glass or directly in open ground, in a sunny position, in fertile and well-drained soil. They are easy to grow, even for beginner gardeners.

The Queen Marguerite, also known as China Aster, is a Chinese annual plant in the Asteraceae family with a very ancient cultivation that has produced and still produces many interesting varieties for flower beds and cut flowers. The plants in the 'Madeleine' mix reach an average height of 55 cm in a few months and are well-branched. Their stems bear oval and serrated bright green leaves. Flowering occurs for at least two months, from July-August to September-October depending on the sowing date. The plants usually flower 3 to 4 months after sowing. It takes the form of inflorescences in heads, which we call flowers. Each 6 to 8 cm wide, is composed of two or three rows of ligules or petals surrounding a beautiful centre of fertile florets in golden yellow. Each plant lives only one season, the time to bloom and produce seeds. They can be collected and resown in the following spring.

The Queen Marguerite 'Madeleine' is a star in flower beds and an excellent cut flower. It has both a rustic and romantic style that will appeal to many gardeners. Although somewhat outdated, China Asters remain popular plants for their floriferousness and ease of cultivation. Their flowers last a long time in a vase, and the plants continue to bloom for a long time if faded flowers are removed. Even just for bouquets, sow them in the vegetable garden to obtain an abundance of flowers in late summer. Among the wide range of varieties, you will find flowers of various shapes, resembling chrysanthemums, with thin, tapered petals, sometimes even ruffled, in pompom or single form like those of the species. They come in many shades, ranging from white to yellow, and all shades of pink and purple. Dwarf cultivars will be perfect for border decoration and will thrive in balcony planters, while tall varieties with single or double flowers will enliven the back of flower beds. To accompany them in the garden, consider autumn asters, dahlias, and ornamental grasses, for example.

Planting and care

Sowing Marguerite Daisies 'Madeleine':

These plants should never be sown in the same place two years in a row. Sow outdoors from April to May, and transplant as soon as the seedlings have 2 to 4 leaves, at a distance of 40 cm, in well-prepared, moist, and well-fertilised soil, in a sunny location. Water frequently, but sparingly. It is beneficial to transplant multiple times, keeping the root ball intact, to promote root development and slow down the growth of the stems, which could break under the weight of the flowers. For earlier flowering, sow under a greenhouse or on a hotbed, in seed trays, from February to April. Sow the Marguerite Daisies in trays filled with sand and peat under cover at a temperature of 16 to 20 °C. Transplant into individual small pots when the seedlings have at least four leaves. Plant them in the garden when they reach a height of 15 cm. Use stakes to support the taller varieties with very double flowers. A later sowing in June allows for staggered flowering until the end of autumn. The seeds can then be sown directly in the garden.

Cultivation:

These plants prefer neutral or slightly alkaline, fertile, well-drained soil and require a sunny exposure. A generous watering will be necessary twice a week during dry periods, but be careful to water the base of the plant and not the foliage, as Marguerite Daisies are susceptible to powdery mildew. Remember to remove faded flowers, as they appear to prolong the flowering period and prevent weakening of the plant.
