Description

Cosmos bipinnatus Fizzy 'Pink' is a variety of bipinnate Cosmos from the lovely 'Fizzy' series. It produces large semi-double, tousled, candy pink flowers with a golden centre. This tall cosmos blooms from July until the first frost, and its stems can reach a height of 1m (3ft) or more, sometimes bending under the weight of its flowers, which are adorned with numerous petals. Sow your cosmos in light soil, in full sun, water them, and then let nature take its course. These plants are almost foolproof!

Cosmos Fizzy 'Pink' is derived from an annual species native to Mexico and the extreme south of the United States, Cosmos bipinnatus. This non-hardy annual plant, related to Dahlias, belongs to the Asteraceae family: it features a characteristic inflorescence in the form of a head and particularly fine foliage reminiscent of fennel. This hybrid cosmos quickly forms a clump 1m (3ft) tall, with a width of 50cm (20in). Flowering begins in July, approximately 85 days after sowing, and lasts until early autumn. The heads are composed of candy-pink, pleated petals with a serrated edge. The flower centre consists of a golden disk. Cosmos flowers attract numerous insects and butterflies, including the Monarch butterfly. The foliage is finely divided into thread-like segments, barely 0.5 to 1mm (0in) wide and has a slight, pleasant fragrance. After flowering, the plant produces spindle-shaped, bristly, dark achene seed heads. The seeds can self-sow, but the resulting plants may not necessarily resemble their parent.

Cosmos Fizzy Pink is a trouble-free and rewarding annual plant, which can fill a sunny slope or bed on its own. With its large tousled pink flowers, it is ideal for bringing life to a romantic or country-style garden. Cosmos flowers are perfect for beginners and almost impossible to fail with. They grow quickly and complement perennial salvias, Buenos Aires verbena, and chrysanthemums until the first frost. They are perfect for adding colour to a new garden, mixed with annual poppies, love-in-a-mist, or cornflowers. Its flowers have excellent vase life.

Planting and care

Sow Cosmos seeds from March to May, at a depth of 3mm (0in), in a fine soil and cover the seeds with a very fine pinch of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a mini greenhouse at a temperature of 18-25°C (64.4-77°F) or wrap it in a polyethylene bag. Keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Light promotes germination, which occurs 7 to 15 days after sowing.

When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots with a diameter of 7cm (3in). Grow them in cooler conditions until the plants are sufficiently developed to be planted outdoors. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions for 7 to 10 days. Plant them in full sun, in moist, well-drained soil, spaced 50cm (20in) apart. Pinch the tips of the shoots on each stem, during transplantation, to encourage branching of the stems and the production of many flowers.

Cosmos prefer a soil with a pH between 6 and 8.5, corresponding to the soil of their original habitat, the alkaline regions of Central America. They prefer full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. These plants are drought-tolerant once established and not prone to diseases, but may be targeted by aphids. Spontaneous seedlings are common but not invasive and not always true to type.
