The Delphinium grandiflorum Blue Diamonds, also known as Chinese Larkspur, is a variety that has preserved the charm of wild plants. It produces light blue flowers throughout the summer on a dense plant that is resistant to bad weather, with highly dissected foliage, perfect for rocky gardens. This weather-resistant plant does not require staking. It thrives in sunny locations with moist soil. Indispensable at the front of perennial borders, in containers, in flower pots near the house, or in bouquets, these plants flourish in the sun in humus-bearing and permeable soils.
The Delphinium Blue Diamonds, or Chinese Delphinium, is one of the many hybrids obtained by cross-breeding D. grandiflorum, which is native to mountainous regions of China, Siberia, Mongolia, and Japan. It is theoretically a perennial plant, but is most often cultivated as an annual. It is hardy and shows rapid growth, forming a dense clump, 34 to 40 cm (13.4 - 15.7 in) wide, with highly dissected palmate foliage in tender green, from which numerous floral spikes, 50 cm (19.7 in) in height, emerge in the summer. Flowering occurs from June to September and is highly visited by pollinating insects. The flowers are single, cup-shaped, arranged on large, erect, well-ventilated spikes, and display five petals of a blue color that can be seen from afar, with the upper petal having a spur. The plant develops from a woody rootstock that extends vertically into the soil.
The characteristic silhouette of Delphiniums always adds volume, verticality, and a lot of charm to perennial borders. The 'Blue Diamonds' selection allows for the quick creation of an elegant and rustic setting by sowing directly in the ground. Its intense blue color is precious, enlarging the space and highlighting small areas. When combined with white, its shade is gentle; a marriage with yellow or orange is more dynamic. Delphiniums are also great companions for moss or gallica roses, with which they create charming and romantic scenes.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
