Description

The Dianthus barbatus, also known as the Single-flowered Sweet William, is a short-lived perennial, grown as a biennial, producing highly fragrant flowers, usually bicolor and vibrant, with fringed petals in shades of white, violet, pink, crimson, or red, in endless combinations. Very robust, hardy, with relatively slow growth, it forms clumps of glaucous foliage that are very floriferous in late spring and early summer over the course of two years. Perfect for cut flowers, this selection is well-suited for mass planting and self-seeds abundantly. Easy to grow in moist, rich, well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade.

The Dianthus barbatus is a plant from the Caryophyllaceae family that can be found in many temperate regions of Europe and Asia. Although short-lived, it is hardy and often considered a biennial, flowering in its second year after sowing. In the first year, the plant forms a tight basal clump of long, pointed leaves, light green to glaucous in color. The flowering occurs in late spring and early summer. The small flowers, arranged in flat clusters measuring 8 to 15 cm (3.1 - 5.9 in) in diameter, are borne on thin, sturdy stems. Their color, highly variable, often shows a combination of 2 colors, variegated or striated. Some plants may have flowers that change color as they bloom. The fragrance of the flowers is both spicy and sweet, reminiscent of cloves and cinnamon.

The Single-flowered Sweet William is an easy-to-grow plant that requires minimal maintenance once established. Like campanulas and columbines, these plants have a place in every garden, imbuing it with poetry and mystery. Choose a prominent location, such as along a pathway or near an entrance, to fully enjoy the plant's sweet fragrance. In flower beds, plant the Sweet Williams in mass to create beautiful patches of color. They can also be grown in pots on the terrace or balcony, with proper drainage and occasional fertilization.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds of the poet's carnation indoors or in a greenhouse, from January to February as a late-flowering annual, or from June to July to see them bloom in spring. Sow on the surface of good quality, well-drained soil. Place the seed tray in a mini-greenhouse at a temperature of 15-20 °C (59-68 °F), or in a transparent polyethylene bag until germination, which takes 7-21 days. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged and do not exclude light. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 8 cm (3.1 in) pots and let the plants grow in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatize them to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before transplanting them outside. Maintain a distance of 30 cm (11.8 in) between the plants and plant them in any fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
