Description

The superb carnation Crimsonia, also known as Dianthus superbus Crimsonia, is a very hardy perennial plant with long spring and summer flowering, offering remarkably fragrant crimson red flowers. Their structure of large, fringed petals, intense color and abundance transform them into true red clouds, starting from the first year after sowing. This exceptional variety is suitable for borders, flower pots and bouquets. Easy cultivation and sowing in light, well-drained soil, in full sun.

The Dianthus superbus is a plant from the family Caryophyllaceae, native to the mountains of Europe and temperate Asia, where it grows in woodlands and damp meadows. The Crimsonia variety forms compact and bushy herbaceous clumps, reaching a height of 38 to 50 cm (19.7 in) when in flower. Its rapid growth allows it to bloom from the year of sowing. Its branched stems are covered with evergreen, linear, soft leaves of a beautiful light blue-green color. From May to August, very fragrant, solitary or paired, intense crimson red flowers appear at the end of sturdy stems, measuring about 4 cm (1.6 in) in diameter. They have 5 deeply cut petals, resembling delicate fringes arranged in a fan shape.

The superb carnation Crimsonia is an easy-to-cultivate plant that requires minimal maintenance once well-established. Like bellflowers and columbines, these plants with a quaint charm have a place in all gardens, imbuing them with great poetry and mystery. Choose a prominent location, for example along a path or near an entrance, to fully enjoy the sweetness of the plants' fragrance. In flower beds, plant Crimsonia carnations in masses at the front, to create beautiful blankets of color. They can also be grown in pots on the terrace or balcony, ensuring good drainage and occasional fertilizer application.

Planting and care

Sow the plumet carnation seeds from February to April.

Sow in a tray, seedling trays or pots filled with a special sowing soil, well-drained. The seeds should be barely covered with soil. Place the seedlings in a propagator, a mini-greenhouse, or a warm location to maintain an optimal temperature of 18 to 20°C. Germination usually takes 14 to 30 days. Keep in the light, as this promotes germination. Keep the surface of the soil moist, but not waterlogged.

Transplant the young plants when they are large enough to handle, into individual pots with a diameter of 8 cm (3.1 in). Gradually acclimatize the young plants to outdoor conditions. Plant them with a distance of 23 cm (9.1 in) between each plant, once the frost has passed.

Culture:

Plant the young carnations in ordinary, permeable and humus-rich soil, preferably light, cool to dry, but above all well-drained. A soil rich in gravel yields good results. In open ground, this plant is quite hardy, resistant up to -15°C. It prefers a very sunny exposure. Lightly prune the clump after the summer flowering to promote regrowth in September. In rich soil, trim part of the foliage with shears after flowering to maintain a dense habit. In poor soil, it will be useful to apply a balanced fertilizer in March. It is useful to divide the clumps every 3 years, to rejuvenate those whose base becomes bare or by easily performing layering or cuttings.
