More information

A distinguished variety of Gazania, with a compact habit, featuring flowers in two shades of pink, quite contrasting, but less so than the varieties with warm colours. In somewhat faded tones, they are of a dark pink with a greyish purple median and a silvery soft pink around. The flower centre is yellow and bordered with brown. The plant offers continuous flowering, from spring to autumn, even during cool weather periods. It is ideal for enhancing borders, rockeries, and sunny planters. Gazanias are perennial plants that thrive in Mediterranean climates and are easy to grow. However, in other regions, they are often grown as annuals. It is recommended to sow them under cover at the end of winter.

Description

Gazania rigens F1 Zany 'Pink' is a hybrid variety with two-tone antique pink flowers that are very distinguished. This cultivar stands out for its uniform growth and its abundance of large flowers with stable colour. Furthermore, its flowers open earlier in the season and persist longer even in cooler or overcast weather. Easy to grow and undemanding, it is equally attractive when planted in a pot or container on a terrace or balcony as it is in a low bed, rockery, or integrated into large landscaping compositions. This plant is exceptionally heat-resistant and thrives particularly well in full sun.

Gazania rigens, also known as Treasure Flower, belongs to the vast Asteraceae family. Native to South Africa and Mozambique, it is characterised by its flower heads, in a bright yellow with an orange heart sprinkled with touches of black and brown. Although it is a herbaceous perennial plant, Gazania is often grown as an annual in cool and humid climates. It can sometimes survive as a perennial in a climate with a relatively mild winter and dry environment, especially in summer and to a lesser extent in winter.

The hybrid Gazania, Gazania rigens F1 Zany 'Pink' is a more compact variety, measuring 20 cm in height and spread. This plant forms a small clump of basal leaves that give rise to numerous stems bearing a single head. These leaves are tough and have a medium green hue on their upper side, while their underside sports a silvery tint. It offers an early and prolonged flowering that renews from May to October, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed. The solitary flowers appear at the end of the stems and resemble large daisies. They measure on average 6 to 7 cm in diameter. The petals, called ligules in the Asteraceae family, are arranged around the heart. With slightly faded tones, they are a dark purplish greyish pink in the middle and a silvery tender pink around. At the centre of the flower are tubular central florets, giving the flower a velvety texture, in yellow, circled in brown. It is important to note that the flowers tend to close in the absence of sunlight.

Gazania rigens F1 Zany 'Pink' is highly valued for its abundant and regular flowering from spring to autumn, as well as for its ability to withstand dry conditions in sunny areas. Thanks to its compact habit and dense vegetation, it exudes an elegance and lightness that harmonises well with the surrounding plants. It adds a spectacular touch to all container arrangements or garden settings. Pair it with Annual Verbenas, Gauras, small grasses like Stipa, or Yarrows. This Gazania adapts well to coastal gardens, where it can thrive in sandy, light, poor soils, enduring drought, full sun, wind, and sea spray.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds of Gazania Zany Pink, previously soaked for a few hours, under glass, from February to April under 3 mm of a mix of compost and sand. Keep them in a warm place, ideally with a temperature ranging from 18 to 25°C. Keep the compost slightly moist without excess. You will need to wait 14 to 30 days to see the seedlings appear. When they are large enough to handle, transplant them into pots where you can acclimatise them for about ten days. After that, plant them in the ground when the last frosts are no longer a concern. Make sure to space each young plant 20 to 30 cm apart.

Cultivation: in full sun, in ordinary soil, well-drained, possibly lightened with gravel, sand, and compost. Gazanias dislike stagnant moisture, so avoid leaving water-filled saucers under the pots. A special flowering plant fertiliser will be appreciated.
