Description

Gazania splendens 'Tiger Stripes Mixed' is a jaw-dropping blend of that displays large, striped blooms in shades of yellow, pink and cream. Exceptionally long-lasting, they provide interest from May to October. The New Day series boasts more compact, bushier plants with excellent garden performance.

Gazania, commonly known as Treasure Flower, belongs to the Asteraceae family and is native to tropical Africa. The standard variety is golden yellow with an orange central disc, punctuated with black and brown. Although a perennial in its natural habitat, it is generally treated as an annual in colder climates. Fairly low-growing, it reaches a height of 30 cm at most. The basal leaves are coarse, medium green with a silvery grey underside. They form large clumps, topped with multiple stems bearing a solitary capitulum or flower head. 'Tiger Stripes Mixed' is a collection of hybrid cultivars belonging to the popular “Kiss” series, bred for their exceptionally large blooms. Each 12 cm flower head features a double row of external ray flowers, striped with flamboyant, contrasting shades of yellow, rose pink and cream. The velvety amber to ochre central disc is covered with fluted disc flowers.

Treasure flowers are perfect for adding splashes of colour to borders and summer bedding schemes. They are suitable for edging, along garden paths or slopes, and look great in pots and containers in a veranda or on the patio. They are drought tolerant, and grow in all soils with a preference for sandy, perfectly drained soils. Make sure to provide them with full sun or else the flowers won't open.

Planting and care

Soak the seeds for a few hours before sowing from February to April. Bury the seeds about 3 mm deep in a mixture of soil and sand. Place in a warm place, ideally at a temperature between 18 and 25°C. Keep the soil slightly moist but not waterlogged. After 14 to 30 days, the first young seedlings will start to appear. When they are strong enough to be handled, transplant them into pots and harden them off for about 10 days. Transplant them into their final position when the frosts are no longer to be feared. Take care to space each plant 20 to 30 cm apart.

Gazania thrives in full sun, in ordinary but well-drained soil, possibly amended with gravel, sand or compost for better drainage. Gazania plants dread stagnant humidity. For more abundant blooms, feed with fertilizer.
