Description

The Geranium Horizon 'New Star F1' is a zonal pelargonium from the Horizon series, which offers dense, compact, uniform plants with short, sturdy stems that bear brightly colored flowers, with early and long-lasting flowering. The rounded clusters of flowers are pale pink with a dark pink center. This resilient variety blooms as early as the beginning of summer if sown from January to mid-March. Ideal for small gardens, hanging baskets, and containers.

Zonal pelargoniums are perennial hybrids from the geranium family, in a vast group known as Pelargonium x hortorum. They are mostly derived from Pelargonium inquinans, native to the southeastern tip of Africa, with contributions from Pelargonium zonale and Pelargonium frutetorum. The Horizon 'New Star F1' geranium forms a bushy clump with a fairly compact habit, and a relatively modest growth of at least 30 cm in all directions. It blooms from spring to autumn, displaying medium-sized pale pink flowers with a dark pink center, and wide petals. They stand out nicely against the bright green foliage. Its sturdy and succulent stems bear circular, undulate leaves with dentate edges and a thick texture, very healthy.

Always more vigorous and floriferous, pelargoniums outdo themselves from one series to another. Generous and undemanding, it is a perfect plant for decorating containers for most of the year. But beyond balconies and terraces, also plant them in sunny flower beds and borders. Plant them in masses, to create a lasting and cheerful display throughout the growing season. These plants tolerate water scarcity quite well, allowing you to combine them with resilient annuals such as garden verbenas, cosmos, zinnias, and add dark foliage plants like ipomoeas to enhance their beauty. In pots or hanging baskets, mix different varieties of geraniums for their varied colors, or add periwinkles, violets, Carex, or silver foliage plants like artemisias or senecios.

Planting and care

Sow pelargonium seeds outdoors, in place, in April-May, after the frost. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil, properly prepared and loosened. Sow the seeds thinly, at a depth of 3 mm, with a spacing of 30 cm. Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes about twenty days. When the plants are large enough to handle, transplant them 15 cm apart from each other.

Another option is to sow indoors from August to September for flowering in early summer the following year. Sow the seeds on the surface of good quality compost at a temperature of 18-20°C, and cover with a pinch of very fine compost or vermiculite. Keep the sowing in the light, as this facilitates germination. When the seedlings are large enough to be moved, proceed with transplantation and grow them in a frost-free environment until the young plants are large enough to be moved outdoors. You can cultivate these plants in a frost-free location before planting them in the ground in the following spring, or in pots. Garden geraniums thrive in fertile, well-drained, properly prepared soil and full sun.
