Description

The 'Purple' Globe Amaranth is a selection of the Gomphrena globosa which produces intense and deep purple flowers. It is a tender perennial, grown as an annual. Throughout the summer, its pom-pom flowers can be picked to make fresh or dried bouquets. Plant  it in your sunny beds, borders, and flower beds!

Gomphrena globosa is a perennial plant native to tropical regions of Central America, notably Guatemala and Panama. It belongs to the Amaranthaceae family, a family that includes numerous ornamental and edible plants. Slightly hardy (around -7°C), but with very rapid growth, it is most often cultivated as an annual plant.

Gomphrena globosa 'Purple' can reach a height of 40 to 60 cm in a few months. Its slender, branched stems bear oval or slightly elongated leaves, measuring 5 to 12 cm long. The foliage is of an intense green. Where winters are mild, it can persist. The flowers of the 'Purple' Globe Amaranth are its main attraction. They resemble small spherical pom-poms measuring 2 to 3 cm in diameter. These colourful inflorescences are composed of papery bracts that retain their shape and colour for a long time, even after flowering.

This 'Purple' Globe Amaranth is suitable for flower beds or borders where it looks best planted in groups. It is an excellent flower for floral arrangements, fresh or dried. To keep them beautiful, pick them as soon as the flowers appear. To complement it in the garden, consider for example Salvia splendens 'Lighthouse Purple', which offers spikes of intense purple flowers while adding height and a different texture to the bed. Rudbeckia hirta 'Toto' provides a beautiful contrast with its bright yellow flowers and black centres, creating a bright and warm touch in the garden. Zinnia 'Zahara Double Fire' will complete the ensemble with its double flowers in a flaming orange.

Planting and care

The 'Purple' Globe Amaranth is preferably sown under cover in a seed tray from March. Just cover the seeds with a thin layer of substrate kept slightly moist. When the seedlings are large enough to be moved, you can separate them and put them in pots if the frost period is not over and keep them warm. Otherwise, you can plant them in the ground spacing them 30 cm apart. Watering will only be necessary in case of drought during the first few weeks after planting.
