Description

Laurentia 'Blue Star', also known as Isotoma axillaris, is a small bushy plant with well-branched stems that forms a mound of finely cut leaves covered with countless sky blue flowers tinged with lilac. This frost-tender perennial plant is often grown as an annual in our climates, with its fragrant flowers blooming from summer to autumn and attracting bees and butterflies. This vigorous, heat-resistant variety, is perfect for quickly filling hanging baskets, planters, and borders.

Native to Australia, Isotoma axillaris or Solenopsis axillaris is a perennial plant often grown as an annual due to its lack of hardiness, but also for its long and abundant flowering. It quickly forms a branched, compact, and nicely rounded clump, 25 to 30 cm in all directions. Its narrow, evergreen, toothed leaves are dark green. Between June and October, and even until the first frosts, its countless small 5-lobed star-shaped flowers in sky blue tinged with lilac succeed each other. They are pleasantly fragrant. This plant withstands heat and drought well, but will be more floriferous in fertile and moist soil.

Laurentia 'Blue Star' is an easy-to-grow and very floriferous plant. With its decorative soft blue flowering, it is used in mass plantings, planted in borders or used to fill gaps, and of course in pots, hanging baskets, planters where it blends well with a wide variety of other annual or perennial plants such as begonias, petunias, pink gypsophila or geraniums for example. It looks particularly good in a tall, narrow pot where it cascades beautifully.

Planting and care

Sow Laurentia Blue Star from January to March.

Sow the seeds in pots, on the surface of a special seed compost. Lightly cover the seeds with vermiculite. Place the pots in a propagator or enclose them in a polythene bag and place the whole at a temperature of 15-21 °C until germination. Transplant the young plants into individual pots. Plant them outside when frost is no longer a concern.

Laurentia requires very little maintenance. Ensure the plant has enough water and remove faded flowers from time to time. Caution: the sap of this plant can be irritating to some people.
