Description

The Annual Lupin 'Avalune Bicolours Mix' is a mix of varieties of Lupinus hartwegii or Hartweg's Lupin from the Avalune series, known for its compact and bushy habit, ideal for edging or containers, flowering just 11 weeks after sowing. This villous Lupin offers a bicolour flowering in lilac-purple and white spikes, and pink-red and white. Much sturdier than the species, it also produces shorter spikes. Their subtle scent, reminiscent of sweet peas, is most noticeable in the evening. Sow it in full sun, in light or sandy, slightly acidic, even poor soil.

The villous Lupin (Lupinus hartwegii) is a Mexican annual plant belonging to the fabaceae family. 'Avalune Bicolours Mix' has a very compact habit, 40 cm tall when in flower, with a width of 35 cm. The compound leaves distinguish themselves from other fabaceae by their palmate leaves with at least five leaflets, radiating from the same petiole. They are villous and dark green. In June-July, short upright spikes covered with flowers in dense whorls appear, each flower measuring 1 to 2 cm long. The flowers, constructed like peas, are red and white and slightly fragrant. The fruit is a pod containing several large seeds, easy to sow. The roots of this plant capture atmospheric nitrogen, converting it into fertilizing elements, enriching poor soils. This easy-to-grow plant also serves as valuable green manure.

Annual lupins, thriving in light, poor, ungrateful soils, but without limestone, self-seed in suitable gardens, creating an abundance of often fragrant spikes. They form beautiful borders alongside hollyhocks and peonies, requiring little maintenance. For a more natural setting, combine lupins with sainfoin, peas, and grasses. In a more refined setting, such as a terrace or patio, the 'Avalune Bicolours Mix' variety stands out particularly well surrounded by nasturtiums, geraniums, and dwarf dahlias in similar tones of white, pink, red, and violet.

Planting and care

Sow The Lupin Avalune Bicolours Mix from March to May, directly in place, as lupins do not tolerate transplanting well. Bury the seeds at a depth of 6 mm, in well-worked and well-loosened soil, with a spacing of 30 cm. The ideal temperature for germination should be 20 to 30°C. Germination usually takes 18 to 25 days. It is not necessary to thin out the sowing. Lupins grow well in any good garden soil, but prefer a deep, well-drained sandy to loamy soil, slightly acidic, and full sun.
