Description

Nemesia 'Carnival Mixed' is a mixed variety of an annual herbaceous plant also known as Elf's Mirror, or Cape Jewel. It grows in sandy soils in South Africa. The very bushy and branched plant develops stems bearing lanceolate, slightly toothed leaves and a multitude of flowers, which emerge in clusters at the axils of the leaves, resembling the shape of certain orchids. This variety reaches a height of 25 cm under favourable conditions and offers a continuous flowering from June to October, in red, orange, yellow, pink, and white.

Nemesia strumosa, also known as African Nemesia, is an annual plant of the scrophulariaceae family originating from South Africa, with rapid growth. It has given rise to numerous horticultural varieties whose floribundity and durability continue to be improved. Nemesia strumosa 'Carnival Mix' flowers are zygomorphic and two-lipped with four protruding petals resembling a cap forming the upper lip. The lower lip consists of two very swollen petals, creating a stark contrast with the dark green foliage. The mix offers a range of red, orange, yellow, pink, and white hues.

This beautiful, exotically charming flower reveals all its splendour in borders, rockeries, or containers. It thrives in well-drained, preferably rich soils. Plant it in full sun or partial shade. Choose well-used locations as the patio, terrace, pathways, or anywhere you can admire its stunning blooms. It pairs easily with Cosmos, Love-in-a-Mist, flax, or alongside grey-foliaged plants like stachys.

Attention, seeds reserved for experienced gardeners accustomed to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds of nemesias Carnival Mix from March to May on the surface of well-worked and loosened soil. Water regularly to maintain some moisture, especially during dry periods. You can also sow in pots or containers filled with moist seed compost, covering the seeds with a very fine pinch of compost or vermiculite. Keep the sowing between 20 and 25 °C. Light promotes germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination generally takes 7 to 14 days. Transplant the young plants into 7.5 cm pots or containers. Plant outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.
