The Trailing Petunia F1 Easy Wave® Navy Velour, also known as Petunia x hybrida hedgiflora, produces spectacularly trailing stems, which can reach over 60 cm, entirely adorned with voluptuous flowers in very dark blue-violet-black, reminiscent of elegant velvet. This robust annual plant resists adverse weather conditions and botrytis, offering continuous flowering until the first overnight frosts. Ideal for adding a luxurious touch to summer flowerbeds, it also thrives when overflowing from pots and hanging baskets. For optimal flowering, sow it under glass from the end of winter in fertile, light soil.
Hybrid petunias all come from several plants originating from the warm regions of South America. Trailing petunias were originally discovered by chance when a scientist noticed in 1989, on the edge of a field, a particularly vigorous wild petunia covered with bright flowers: Petunia inflata. Crossed with other species and hybrids, this species gave rise to trailing petunias, which marketing named Surfinias. The Trailing Petunia F1 Easy Wave Navy Velour belongs to the Solanaceae family, close to ornamental tobacco, its foliage also contains alkaloids. This plant quickly forms a round tuft, almost a bush, at least 30 cm in height by 40 cm in diameter, with a very trailing habit. It produces cascades of flowers from June until the first frosts, provided faded flowers are regularly removed and it is regularly supplied with fertiliser. Its velvety textured cup-shaped flowers are of a good size, measuring 6 cm in diameter. The furry foliage, particularly resistant to diseases and adverse weather conditions, has entire margins and a dark green hue.
No other annual flowering plant has undergone such intensive selection efforts as the petunia, a work that spans over a century. Petunias, like the Easy Wave Navy Velour variety, rival geraniums in splendour and length of flowering. For maximum visual impact, place these petunias in large containers near passageways or in hanging baskets above low walls to enjoy the cascade of flowers. They are also perfect for creating extensive floral displays in borders and for enhancing borders composed of grey-foliaged plants, such as cerastiums or artemisias, or for covering the base of roses.
Attention, seeds reserved for experienced gardeners accustomed to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Botanical data
Sow Navy Velour petunia seeds from late winter to mid-spring at 21-27°C, in a seed tray, spreading the seeds on the surface of a good seed compost. You can mix the seeds with sand or light compost to sow more thinly. Do not cover the seeds, but press them into the substrate. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Keep the sowing in the light, in a tight clear plastic bag. Germination usually takes 10 to 21 days. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into pots and let them develop in cooler conditions. For 10 to 15 days, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions, then, when all risk of frost is passed, plant in open ground, in a sunny position, sheltered from strong winds, in well-drained soil. For pot culture, transplant the seedlings into 7.5 cm diameter pots, place them in a cool, well-ventilated place, in a bright position and protected from direct sunlight.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
