Description

Easy to grow and highly decorative, Salvia viridis 'Pink Sundae' offers a multitude of flowers with pink bracts that remain in place throughout the summer. Its upright floral stems are ideal for creating fresh or dried flower bouquets. This annual plant can be grown in any garden, in a flower bed or even in a pot on a terrace. Sow it in place in spring, in full sun or partial shade, in rich and well-drained soil.

Belonging to the Lamiaceae family, Salvia viridis or Salvia horminum is an annual sage, also known as green sage. It grows wild in dry and arid areas around the Mediterranean and has given rise to numerous cultivars selected for their brightly coloured bracts. The 'Pink Sundae' selection forms a bushy clump that reaches 60 cm in height when in bloom and 30 cm in width. Its upright stems bear small, nectar-rich flowers with prominent bracts. The flowers, arranged in clusters along the stems, fall quickly, but the large pink sterile bracts remain in place throughout the summer and until the first frost.

The floral stems of hormin sage are perfect for floral art. Once cut, they can last 7 to 10 days in a vase. For dried bouquets, cut the stems when the bracts are well coloured and hang them to dry. The bracts retain their colour well.

With its upright habit, Salvia hormin 'Pink Sundae' brings height to flower beds. In the vegetable garden, its flowers attract pollinating insects and butterflies. It is perfect for quickly adding colour to the garden or terrace throughout the summer and self-seeds easily. To create beautiful summer bouquets and attract beneficial insects to the garden, combine it with Cosmos Cosimo Red White with bicolour flowers, Echinacea Butterfly Kisses with pink flowers, Zinnia Elegans Purple Prince or even Gypsophila Snow Flake which will bring lightness to your flower bed with its fluffy white flowers.

Planting and care

Sow Salvia viridis 'Pink Sundae' directly in place in the spring (after the last frost), in well-tilled and prepared soil, burying the seeds, in groups of 2 or 4, under 3 mm of substrate. Thin out afterwards to leave only one plant every 30 cm.

Sowing in a tray is also possible. Proceed in March-April by preparing a tray filled with seed compost. Place the seeds on the surface without covering them. Light is essential for good germination. Then place the tray at a temperature of 24 °C. Germination will take between 10 and 14 days. Once the plants are strong enough to be handled, transplant them into pots. Transplant outside once all risk of frost has passed, at a distance of 30 cm.

Horminum sages appreciate sun or light shade in a rich, humus-rich soil that is moist but not waterlogged. It is an easy plant that requires little maintenance. Simply cut off faded flowers regularly to prolong flowering.
