I was planning to create a 'wall' of beans with the beautiful little red flowers like on the seed packaging and cover an unsightly yellowish wall. The result was that all the plants sprouted, that's true. But the snails and other critters got the better of the majority of them. The 8 survivors seemed to be in good shape. I still hoped to cover at least part of the wall. But here's the thing, the plants didn't 'shoot' up as much as indicated on the packaging and the website. I followed the instructions given on the website, but well, my 8 survivors, with the legume plant fertilizer (made from manure) and the watering, didn't yield anything, and the plants are barely 1m (3ft) tall without any flowers. I'm disgusted. Thank you and have a good day.

Lathyrus odoratus grandiflora Cream Southborne is a new annual sweet pea variety that will delight bouquet lovers: its large, beautiful, creamy-white, wavy flowers have a fantastic fragrance. Grow in a sunny location in fertile, moist soil.

Lathyrus odoratus is an annual herbaceous plant of the Fabaceae family originating from south-eastern Italy and Sicily. ‘Cream Southborne’ is a climbing variety: it can reach up to 1.80 m in height and 30 cm in width in the space of a few months. Its quadrangular winged stems have stipules at their base, bear pairs of light-green leaflets and end in a terminal tendril. Flowering takes place in July-August. The papilionaceous flowers are large, grouped in axillary clusters of up to 5 creamy white wavy blooms. The flowers are composed of 5 petals: a standard, 2 free wing petals, and 2 fused petals. They give off a delicate fragrance, which has a sweet floral aroma with honeyed and musky notes. The fruit is a flat pod that splits at maturity, forcibly expelling its seeds away from the plant. It is essential to regularly remove wilted flowers, as seed production stunts flowering. Sweet peas root deeply in the ground to find water and nutrients.

Sweet peas are irreplaceable, their charming and old-fashioned flowers make quaint bouquets, look stunning in hanging baskets will soon cover up an old garden wall or fence. They are beautiful in summer flower beds, where they will use neighbouring plants or shrubs as a support. They can also form colourful carpets when grown as ground cover. Sweet peas are a must-have in cottage gardens alongside peonies, hollyhocks, fox gloves, peach leaved bellflowers, and columbines. They also do well in the fertile and well-watered soil of the vegetable garden, where they can be used as cut flowers.

Planting and care

Before sowing them, soak the sweet pea seeds in a bowl of water for 6 hours. This will improve the germination speed.

Sow the Sweet Peas directly in place at the base of a trellis in March-April, in groups of 2 or 3 seeds, at a depth of 2.5 cm. Leave a minimum distance of 30 cm between two groups.
When the seedlings reach the stage of the second pair of leaves, cut the tip of each stem to promote branching.
Regular but not excessive watering will accelerate its growth. A sunny location, a supply of flowering plant fertilizer, and the removal of faded flowers will promote abundant flowering from June to August.
Be careful of snails and slugs that love to devour young plants.
