Description

Viola cornuta 'Laeta Pink Bicolor', also known as Horned pansy or Horned Violet 'Laeta Pink', produces small flowers, the size of a coin, in delightful colours. The transparent petals are tinted with soft pink shades and speckled with brown-purple around a small yellow eye. It pairs well with spring bulbs and autumn asters in the garden, allowing for lovely compositions in pots. This biennial plant thrives in humus-bearing soil, in partial shade or filtered sunlight, where it forms a carpet of dark and evergreen leaves. Its edible flowers add an elegant touch to pastries.

It accompanies spring bulbs, then autumn asters, in the garden and creates beautiful compositions in pots. This small biennial plant grows in humus-bearing soil, in partial shade or filtered sunlight, where it spreads its carpet of dark and evergreen foliage. The flowers are edible and enhance pastries with a perfect touch of elegance.

Belonging to the violet family, the horned pansy, which grows wild in the Pyrenees, is a low perennial plant that has given rise to numerous hybrids, the most famous of which are horticultural pansies. The variety 'Pink Bicolor' is a spreading herbaceous plant 10 to 15 cm tall when in bloom, with dark green, ovate, scalloped, evergreen leaves, forming a spreading mat. Depending on the sowing date, this plant blooms from spring to autumn. Its flowers are quite round, resembling pansies, but their petals are arranged differently. The top two are erect, the other three are downward-facing. It spreads quite rapidly thanks to its rhizomes and also self-seeds easily in the garden.

Horned violets are suitable for borders, shaded rockeries, the front of low beds, pots and containers on balconies and terraces. They can be combined with other low spring plants such as Forget-Me-Nots, Primroses, Botanical Tulips, Daisies and small Daffodils. In autumn, they complement the blooming of Asters.

The flowers of horned violets are edible, so you can decorate your plates with one or two flowers, or even sprinkle some on your salads to add a touch of colour.

Planting and care

Sow the Pink Bicolor horned violet from July to September, then transplant the young plants into a pot. Plant your young plants in October before the first frosts, spacing them 20 cm apart, in open ground. Alternatively, sow under cover at the end of winter and plant the seedlings in open ground at the end of spring. Germination takes about 15 days at 16°C. Use a mix composed of 1/3 compost, 1/3 garden soil, and 1/3 river sand. It takes 15 days for the seedlings to appear. Watch out for attacks from snails and slugs, which are fond of these young plants. Removing faded flowers will encourage more flowering. Horned violets thrive in light soil, rich in humus, moist, but well-drained, as they dislike excess winter moisture. In heavy soil, add some sand to improve drainage. Plant horned violets in a sunny position, but not scorching, or under light shade.
