Description

Siberian Orange Wallflower, in Latin Erysimum allionii or Erysimum x marshallii is a biennial plant or a short-lived perennial. Its slightly fragrant flowers with a spicy scent bloom in clusters at the top of the stems, on well-branched plants, from late spring to early summer, in a beautiful shade of deep orange. It brightens sunny borders, rockeries or slopes, as well as pots on the balcony or terrace, and abundantly attracts bees and butterflies. It blooms for several weeks in the sun, in well-drained, even poor and chalky soil, and readily self-seeds where it thrives, it can also adorn vases indoors.

The Orange Erysimum allionii, also known as Erysimum x allionii, Cheiranthus x allionii is a horticultural hybrid resulting from the cross-breeding of several species of Erysimum and Cheiranthus, plants close to wallflowers that originate from the limestone and dry areas of Southern Europe, Central Asia, and North America. All these plants belong to the brassicaceae or cruciferous family. This variety is a very hardy perennial, but its lifespan is limited so it is often considered a biennial that blooms in the second year before disappearing. It is characterised by its bushy habit not exceeding 50 cm in height by 35-40 cm in spread, as well as its long flowering period from April-May to June-July. The particularly generous flowering consists of clusters of small flowers. The flowers are small (1.5 cm) but grouped in clusters of about ten centimetres and open successively. Sometimes, a small summer reblooming can be observed with careful pruning of this plant. Its dark green, evergreen foliage consists of very fine sword-shaped leaves. It is also decorative due to the contrast it creates with the flowering. This plant will survive normal winters in very well-drained soil, but its foliage may be slightly damaged by very severe frosts.

Orange Wallflower is a perfect plant for all sunny, somewhat dry and rocky areas of the garden, as well as on the terrace, or in a planter placed on a sun-drenched wall. It also works well in rockeries or borders, alongside Love-in-a-Mist, Californian Poppies, Evening Primroses, Perennial Flax or in a border with taller plants like Purple Toadflax, Mulleins or Gauras, equally undemanding.

Planting and care

The optimal germination temperature for Wallflowers is between 18 and 20°.

Under cover: sow the Siberian Orange Wallflower in March / April in a special seed compost or in a mix composed of 1/3 sand + 2/3 garden soil, then plant the young plants in the garden as soon as they are strong enough to be handled, in autumn or at the beginning of spring. Be careful not to damage the taproots during planting.

In open ground: sow thinly from April to June and cover the seeds with 5 mm of sifted compost. Lightly press down and water gently. Maintain moisture during germination and cover with a light fleece to protect the seedlings from direct sunlight. Watch out for slugs and snails which are fond of young plants.

Cultivation :

Plant your Wallflowers in early autumn, in a very sunny location. The soil should be properly loosened and drained. If necessary, coarse sand or gravel can be incorporated into the planting mix. These plants tolerate limestone and occasionally dry soils, but they dislike soils which are waterlogged in winter. For container cultivation, use a mix of regular soil, leaf compost, and sand or gravel, ensuring good drainage at the bottom of the pot (pot shards, small stones...). Water regularly, but not excessively. Remove faded flowers to promote new flowering. The plant can be pruned short at the end of the season, leaving only portions of stems with 3 or 4 leaves. In mild climates, or if the winter is not too harsh, it will regrow in spring. After 3 or 4 years, it will be necessary to replace the plant.
