Description

The 'Anytime Deep Purple' stock or Matthiola incana is part of the Anytime series known for its extended flowering season and very double flowers. This robust annual offers spikes of a very beautiful, pure and intense purple. Its fragrant flowers, blooming from late spring to late summer, brighten borders and containers and are perfect for fresh and elegant bouquets. Easy to sow, it stands out for its well-branched stems and vigorous appearance, adding a colourful touch to the garden.

The stock, Latin name Matthiola incana which also has the botanical synonym Cheiranthus incanus, is a perennial herbaceous plant with a short lifespan, or a biennial, often grown as an annual. It belongs to the brassicaceae family (like cabbages or mustard) and originates from the Mediterranean basin, in the Canary Islands, where it grows on rocks near the coast. It is also known as Garden Stock or Gillyflower. The selection 'Anytime Deep Purple' produces upright plants with a bushy and branched habit, reaching around 75 cm in height and 30 cm in width. They bear narrow lanceolate grey-green leaves and display fragrant, 2 to 3 cm diameter flowers in spikes from April-May to August-September. They produce fully double flowers. This flowering is very abundant, fragrant, honey-producing and nectar-rich. When grown in pots, these plants are not branched and produce a single, particularly developed flower spike.

The 'Anytime Deep Purple' stock is ideal for borders, edging, rockeries or containers. Planted near walkways, it perfumes the air with its sweet fragrance. It thrives in well-drained soil and enjoys a sunny exposure. In borders, it pairs perfectly with summer annuals such as tree mallows, love-in-a-mist, columbines, campanulas, perennial geraniums or poppies. It also fits well in romantic bouquets, in harmony with peonies and lilacs.

Planting and care

Sow the Deep Purple stocks from February to April. Sow the seeds on the surface of moist compost, in pots or containers, and lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite. Place in a propagator or enclose the containers in a transparent plastic bag, kept in a warm place, at a temperature of 20-25 °C. Keep the seedlings near a source of light, as this promotes germination. Keep the compost surface moist, but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 10 to 21 days.

When the young plants are sufficiently developed, transplant them into 7.5 cm pots or containers. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions for a few days before planting them out, after all risk of frost, 30 cm apart. Choose a sunny location and well-drained soil, or containers filled with a rich, well-draining mix.

In dry soil and sunny exposure, remember to water your plants frequently in summer so that the soil never completely dries out between waterings.
