Description

Stock 'Anytime Lavender' or Matthiola incana is part of the Anytime series known for its extended flowering season and very double flowers. This robust annual plant produces spikes of deep, light purple or intense lavender flowers. On well-branched plants, they bloom bright and fragrant from late spring to late summer. They are easy to sow in borders or containers and make beautiful bouquets.

The stock, with its Latin name Matthiola incana also known botanically as Cheiranthus incanus, is a short-lived perennial herbaceous plant, or a biennial, often grown as an annual. It belongs to the Brassicaceae family (like cabbages or mustard) and originates from the Mediterranean basin, the Canary Islands, where it grows on rocks near the coast. It is also called Gillyflower. The 'Anytime Lavender' selection produces upright, bushy and branched plants reaching about 75 cm in height with a width of 30 cm. They bear narrow lanceolate grey-green leaves and display fragrant flowers arranged in spikes, 2 to 3 cm in diameter from April to May and August to September. They produce fully double flowers. This flowering is very abundant, fragrant, honey-producing, and nectar-rich. When grown in pots, these plants are not branched and produce a single, particularly developed flower spike.

The 'Anytime Lavender' stock is ideal for borders, rockeries, or containers. Planted near pathways, it perfumes the air with its sweet fragrance. It thrives in well-drained soil and enjoys a sunny exposure. In borders, it pairs perfectly with summer annuals like tree mallows, love-in-a-mist, columbines, bellflowers, perennial geraniums, or poppy plants. It also fits well in romantic bouquets, harmonising with peonies and lilacs.

Planting and care

Sow Anytime Lavender stock seeds from February to April. Sow the seeds on the surface of moist compost, in pots or trays, and lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite. Place in a Propagator or enclose the containers in a clear plastic bag kept in a warm place at a temperature of 20-25 °C. Keep the sowing near a source of light, as this promotes germination. Keep the compost surface moist, but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 10 to 21 days.

When the young plants are sufficiently developed, transplant them into 7.5 cm pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions for a few days before planting them out, after all risk of frost, spacing them 30 cm apart. Choose a sunny location and well-drained soil, or pots filled with a rich, well-drained mix.

In dry soil and sunny exposure, remember to water your plants often in summer so that the soil never completely dries out between waterings.
