Stock 'Anytime Yellow' or Matthiola incana is part of the Anytime series known for its extended flowering season and very double flowers. This robust annual displays spikes of soft and bright buttery yellow. Its fragrant flowers, carried by well-branched stems, bloom from late spring to late summer. Easy to sow, it brightens borders and containers and fits well in fresh and elegant bouquets.
The 'Anytime Yellow' stock, known by its Latin name Matthiola incana which also has the botanical synonym Cheiranthus incanus, is a short-lived perennial herbaceous plant, or a biennial, often grown as an annual. It belongs to the brassicaceae family (like cabbages or mustard) and originates from the Mediterranean basin, in the Canary Islands, where it grows on rocks near the coast. It is also called Garden Stock or Gillyflower. The 'Anytime Yellow' selection produces upright plants with a bushy and branched habit, reaching about 75 cm in height and 30 cm in width. They bear narrow lanceolate grey-green leaves and display, from April-May to August-September, fragrant flowers arranged in spikes, 2 to 3 cm in diameter. They produce fully double flowers. This flowering is very abundant and fragrant, honey-producing and nectar-rich. When grown in pots, these plants are not branched and produce a single, particularly developed spike of flowers.
The 'Anytime Yellow' stock is ideal for borders, rockeries, or containers. Planted near pathways, it perfumes the air with its sweet fragrance. It thrives in well-drained soil and enjoys a sunny exposure. In borders, it pairs perfectly with summer mallows, love-in-a-mist, columbines, campanulas, perennial geraniums, or poppies. It also fits well in romantic bouquets, harmonising with peonies and lilacs.

Botanical data
Sow Anytime Yellow stocks from February to April on the surface of moist compost, in pots or containers, and lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite. Place in a propagator or enclose the containers in a clear plastic bag, kept in a warm place, at a temperature between 20-25 °C. Keep the sowing near a source of light, as this promotes germination. Keep the compost surface moist, but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 10 to 21 days.
When the young plants are sufficiently developed, transplant them into 7.5 cm pots or containers. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions for a few days before planting them out, after all risk of frost, spacing them 30 cm apart. Choose a sunny location and well-draining soil, or containers filled with a rich, well-draining mix.
In dry soil and sunny exposure, remember to water your plants often in summer so that the soil never completely dries out between waterings.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
