Description

From the sizeable family Asteraceae, California Giant Zinnia, from its Latin name Zinnia elegans California Giant Mix, is a vigorous herbaceous annual plant (90 to 100 cm high and 30 cm wide) producing an abundance of flowers from July to the first frosts.

Its rigid, well-branched stems bear broad, rounded, pointed pale green leaves. The giant, terminal and solitary, double to semi-double flowers, 10 to 12 cm across, are decked with bright, shimmering colours: scarlet red, bright pink, yellow, orange, purple, white.

The flowers are capitula with large, flat petals that come in a variety of colours. The flowers’ petals are slightly rounded at their tips. The name of this common Zinnia refers to the Californian origin of the original botanical species of Zinnia.

The silhouette of its slender bush makes it suitable for use in the mid or foreground of beds. It prefers a warm, sunny location. It requires little water. A well-drained soil will suit it perfectly.

The blooms, even if unscented, still attract butterflies that come to feed on their nectar, allowing it to play an important part in the garden's ecosystem.

The long, strong stems of Giant Zinnia have an excellent vase life, making it possible to create colourful summer bouquets.

Planting and care

Sow Zinnia :

  • In March-April, under heated cover to obtain young plants that can be transplanted in May. The ideal growing temperature is 22 °C. It takes 14 days for the young shoots to appear. Seed emergence occurs in the dark so make sure to cover the seeds well with a centimetre of soil when sowing.

  • In May, directly in the garden, in a warm, sunny place. Plant the seedlings out in your beds, 30 cm apart.

Powdery mildew (a fungus that forms a visible white powder on the surface of the foliage) can sometimes coat the leaves and impair the growth of the plant.

Deadheading faded flowers will encourage the production of new blooms.
