Description

Zinnia marylandica 'Zahara Mixed is a compact and particularly robust array of Zinnia. This selection comes in a very diverse mix of vivid, bright shades and flowers abundantly all summer long. They are remarkably long-lasting in the garden as well as in containers, and make magnificent bouquets.

Much appreciated for their sturdiness, their stunning colours and ease of cultivation, Zinnias are a valuable asset in any garden. Versatile, they can be placed in borders, beds or even in the vegetable garden, between rows of crops.

Zinnia marylandica 'Zahara Mixed' features a ompact growth habit, measuring up to 45 cm high and 45 cm wide. You can easily combine them with Gauras, Cosmos or ornamental grasses such as Stipa tenuifolia for a more contemporary garden design.

Native to an area ranging from the Southern United States to Argentina, Zinnia is an herbaceous annual plant belonging to the family Asteraceae. It bears vigorous, stunning, vividly coloured flowers on stiff, upright stems, which vary in size and shape from one variety to the next. Its leaves are linear to oval, pointed and are of a beautiful medium green colour. Zinnia flowers generously from July onwards and continues to bloom until the first frosts. It is a nectar-rich plant that will attract plenty of bees and butterflies.

Zinnias like the sun and resist well to strong heat, provided that you remember to water them every once in a while. It performs best in neutral, rich, well-drained soil. It is quite undemanding and will adapt to the average garden soil.

Deadhead faded flowers regularly to encourage the production of more blooms. Easy to grow, it can occasionally be prone to developing powdery mildew; an inconvenience that can be easily avoided by planting it in a situation with good air circulation and by taking care to not wet its foliage when watering.

Planting and care

Direct sow Zinnia Marylandica 'Zahara Mixed’ seeds from April to May in warm soil that has been raked to a fine tilth. Do not bury the seeds too deep (3 mm is sufficient) and space them 30 cm apart. Keep the soil moist until germination, which usually takes between 7 and 14 days.

For an early flowering, you should sow from March to April (indoors, at a temperature between 15 and 25 °C) in a tray filled with a good seed compost that you will keep moist but not waterlogged. When the plants are large enough to be handled, prick them into pots. Gradually acclimatize your zinnias to cooler conditions for a fortnight or so before planting them out in the garden, once all risk of frost has passed. Space the plants 30 cm apart.

Zinnias like the sun and resist well to strong heat, provided that you remember to water them every once in a while. It performs best in neutral, rich, well-drained soil. When planting, watch out for hungry slugs who are very fond of their tender young leaves.
