Description

Emilia javanica 'Irish Poet' is a variety distinguished by its vivid orange flowers, in feathery pompoms, with a more intense orange hue than the species known as "Orange Emilia" or "Scarlet Emilia". These flowers are borne on slender stems, giving the flowering a delicate and airy appearance. It is an annual plant well-suited for edging, borders, or containers. Easy to grow in full sun and well-drained soil, it blooms from summer to the first frosts and readily self-seeds, providing enduring flowering with minimal effort.

Emilia javanica 'Irish Poet' is a herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia, the wild species Emilia javanica is often found in meadows, fallow lands, and disturbed areas, where it naturally thrives in full sun, in well-drained soils. Perennial in its native range, this plant is typically grown as an annual in cooler climates.

The 'Irish Poet' cultivar is the result of horticultural selection aiming to enhance the bright colour and feathery texture of the flowers of the species. The plant has an upright habit, with relatively fast growth, reaching an average height of 50 cm at maturity. Its delicate appearance is mainly due to its slender stems, which gracefully bear the characteristic flowers of this cultivar. The flowers of Emilia javanica 'Irish Poet' are a vibrant orange, with a soft, feathery texture that gives them the appearance of small brushes or silky pompoms. They measure 1 to 2 cm in diameter and cluster in heads at the tops of the stems. Flowering typically starts in late spring or early summer and extends until the first autumn frosts. The flowers are not only decorative but also attract pollinators like butterflies. The foliage of this Emilia is light green, consisting of small alternate and lobed leaves forming a compact base around the floral stems. The leaves measure 5 to 10 cm in length and have a soft texture. After flowering, the flowers of Emilia javanica 'Irish Poet' produce small dry fruits called achenes, which have a wing, aiding in their wind dispersal. This ability to self-seed easily allows the plant to reappear year after year, even in the simplest growing conditions.

Emilia javanica 'Irish Poet' is an excellent plant to add bright colour and an airy touch to a flower bed or large border. With its light habit and vibrant orange flowers, it pairs particularly well with Cosmos 'Sonata White', whose delicate white flowers soften the brilliance of the Emilia. Another beautiful combination is with Coreopsis 'Tequila Sunrise', with its golden yellow flowers and red centres creating a vibrant harmony with the orange of Emilia. To add height and a light touch to the ensemble, consider planting some Verbena bonariensis.

Planting and care

1-Direct sowing, in place:

Sow the seeds of Emilia from March to May, finely, in furrows spaced 30 cm apart, and at a depth of 3 mm. The soil will have been previously loosened and prepared. Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Thin out the sowing, maintaining a spacing of 23 to 30 cm between each young plant.

2-Seeds can also be sown in pots or containers filled with moist compost, covering the seeds with a very fine sprinkle of compost or vermiculite.

Keep the young plants between 15 and 20°C. Do not exclude light, as it promotes germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist, but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 14 to 30 days. Transplant the young plants into 7.5 cm diameter pots or containers. Place them outside after all risk of frost has passed, maintaining a spacing of 23 to 30 cm between each young plant.

Cultivation:

Emilias appreciate sunlight and well-drained, even chalky soils. These plants readily self-seed in poor areas. Emilia is quite tolerant to drought once established, but to encourage continuous and abundant flowering, water regularly in dry periods, without saturating the soil. This plant does not require excessive feeding; a light application of compost at planting time is sufficient. To prolong flowering, regularly remove faded flowers, which will encourage the plant to produce new flowers throughout the season. This Emilia readily self-seeds so, if you wish to control its spread, make sure to cut off the heads before they produce seeds.

In regions with mild winters, it may sometimes behave as a perennial and reappear in spring, but in colder areas, it needs to be replanted each year.
