Description

The 'Forever Happy' Statice is a selection of Limonium sinuatum that stands out for its flowering in shades of pink, salmon, and apricot. It is a hardy plant usually grown as an annual. It produces panicles of tiny flowers with a particularly durable paper-like texture throughout the summer. Highly prized in fresh or dried bouquets, they retain their colour for a long time. Annual statice thrives in the sun in well-drained, light soil that is not too dry in summer.

Limonium sinuatum 'Forever Happy' (synonym Statice sinuata), commonly known as Sinuate Sea Lavender, is derived from a Mediterranean herbaceous plant in the Plumbaginaceae family. This bushy species has an upright and somewhat stiff habit. The 'Forever Happy' cultivar forms flowering clumps reaching a height of 70cm and a diameter of 30cm. The plant develops a dense basal rosette composed of oblong, highly undulate, lanceolate, bright green, deciduous leaves. From July to September, winged floral stems appear, branched and adorned with a few small leaves, which bear clusters of 8 to 10cm, consisting of tiny flowers with bracts of various colours and a paper-like texture. The flower itself is much more discreet, yellow and not very visible. The flowering is nectariferous. The fruit is a capsule containing a single seed. This plant readily self-seeds in light soil.

Sinuate sea lavender is undoubtedly one of the easiest flowers to dry. Simply cut the longest stems possible, hang them upside down in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place. They retain their colours for a long time, which soften slightly. 'Forever Happy' Statice can also lighten up borders alongside more massive blooms (roses, peonies, etc.). In bouquets, statice can be paired with globe thistles and mophead hydrangeas, for example.

Planting and care

Sow the 'Forever Happy' Statice seeds in February/March in a greenhouse, mini-greenhouse, or heated room, at home, on the surface of good potting soil and cover with vermiculite or a thin layer of potting soil. Germination takes 7 to 14 days at 18-24°C.

Transplant the sufficiently developed young plants into pots, spacing them 5cm apart, at a slightly lower temperature. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting them in the ground, after the last frost, in a deep, well-drained soil. Space the plants 30cm apart.

Statice plants are truly easy to grow. They appreciate the sun, a well-drained, sandy, and dry soil. They tolerate salt spray and strong winds, making them perfect candidates for coastal gardens. Planting is done in spring, on warmed soil. Once in place, simply remove the faded flowers, as this stimulates the emergence of new flowers. At the end of the season, if you want to try to preserve Statice, cut back the stems.

Like many Mediterranean plants, Statice is highly drought-resistant, but it needs water to flower well in summer. In its native region, it blooms before the arrival of summer drought. This plant does not appreciate humidity, which makes it susceptible to Botrytis, grey mould.
