Description

Sanvitalia 'Million Suns' seeds form a plant sometimes called creeping Zinnia, in prostrate tufts, with bright green foliage, a dense ball-like habit, and very good branching. This variety which won the Gold Medal at Fleuroselect in 2010 is covered with countless small 1 cm flowers resembling golden-yellow daisies. It is a frost-tender perennial plant, often grown as an annual in our climates. It is suitable for dry soils and full sun, undemanding, ideal for rockeries, and in containers.

Sanvitalia speciosa (syn. procumbens) 'Million Suns', also known as Melampodium montanum 'Million Suns', is a short-lived herbaceous perennial plant and slightly hardy member of the aster family, native to Mexico. It is a creeping plant with a prostrate, slightly trailing habit, reaching a height of no more than 25 cm, with a spread of 30 cm. Its growth is rapid, especially in warm climates. It has hairy stems covered with opposite, bright green, ovate leaves, similar to zinnias. 'Million Suns' stands out with its extended flowering period, from May until the frosts, the abundance of its golden-yellow flowers, its exceptional compactness, and excellent basal branching. The flowers are modest-sized, single heads, 1 cm in diameter.

Sanvitalias, still not widely spread in our gardens, are nevertheless perfect for enhancing edgings, flower baskets, and flower pots. Spaced 20 to 30 cm apart, they quickly form a dense and decorative carpet. They spread in the crevices of rockeries or between taller plants, bringing a natural look to flower beds. These annuals harmonize well with ageratums, marigolds, Californian poppies, or even aromatic plants. Sanvitalia 'Million Suns' looks stunning in hanging baskets, paired with helichrysums, trailing geraniums, or bacopas.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds of sanvitalia 'Million Suns' from February to April.

Sow on moist soil and lightly cover the seeds with vermiculite or light soil. The seeds should be placed 1.5 mm deep. Place in a propogator at 18-20°C. Germination occurs 14 to 21 days after sowing. After sowing, keep the substrate moist, but not waterlogged, until the plants appear.

When the seedlings are sufficiently developed to be handled, plant them in 7.5 cm pots. Shelter them in a greenhouse at 15°C. Gradually harden them off and place them outside when all risk of frost has passed. These plants are perfect for pots and hanging baskets.

While sunlight is essential for beautiful flowering, any good garden soil, light and well-drained, is suitable for this plant.
