I wanted to try growing some bidens but nothing sprouted, no shoots. When I saw the appearance of the seeds, I had a big doubt. In comparison, I successfully sprouted seeds of Petunia x hybrida pendula at the same time without any issues. If I have to try again, it will be with different seeds.

Description

The Bidens ferufolia Golden Eye is an annual mainly used in hanging baskets and containers. Its very compact habit (25cm) is perfectly suited for container gardening. Its numerous yellow flowers, shaped like small stars, bloom from June to October. In mild climates, they can even continue blooming until November. If the frost is very light, the foliage will also retain its green color during the winter.

Bidens is a must-have for pot culture. Thanks to its ramified stems spreading in all directions from its base and its dark green, finely cut foliage, it provides a great base for taller neighbors, such as verbenas. The golden-yellow color of its five ligulate flowers surrounding its small heart brings a lot of brightness during the summer season and allows for numerous combinations. It will thrive alongside purple annual lobelias, dark blue Surfinia petunias, and will contrast with red begonias.

Low-maintenance, it only requires a little grooming to remove faded flowers. However, it is rather demanding and appreciates fertilizer. Additionally, don't forget to water it in case of high temperatures.

Planting and care

The Bidens ferulifolia Golden Eye is preferably sown under cover in a seed tray from February. If frost is still persistent in your region, wait until March, as the seeds will prefer a temperature between 13 and 18°C.

Just cover the seeds with a thin layer of substrate that you will keep slightly moist. Place them in the sun (essential) and if possible, wrap the pots in a transparent plastic film during the germination period. They will sprout between 10 and 21 days. When the seedlings are large enough to be moved, you can separate them and put them in pots if the frost period is not over and keep them warm. Otherwise, you can arrange them in flower boxes or pots. You can gradually acclimate them if the nights are still cool by taking them out of their shelter during the day. Prefer a rich substrate that is not too waterlogged.

To further branch out the Bidens, as soon as the plants have reached at least 5 cm (2 in), you can pinch the tips of the stems to encourage them to divide.
