In 2 orders, I bought 6 packs, which amounts to 90 seeds. Only about twenty of them germinated. I'm quite disappointed.

Description

The seeds of Canna indica 'T&M Hybrids' are actually a delicious mix that will give you plants with vibrant and warm colours, you will get red, yellow, orange, pink and apricot. Cannas are perfect in borders and containers to brighten up the surroundings of a house throughout the summer.

Canna indica, is a perennial plant with herbaceous rhizomes native to tropical areas of South America. In Reunion Island it is called Conflore. In the Caribbean, a starch called Toloman is extracted from its root and used in baby food.

From its rhizomatous root grow large enveloping leaves , highly decorative, 80 cm (32in) to 1 m (3ft) long, resembling those of a banana tree. The leaves can be of multiple colours : green, purple, striated with red or yellow… From July to October thick leafy stems rise vertically to over 1.50 m (5ft) and bear panicles of 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) flowers in diameter.

Cannas like a warm and sunny exposure as well as a rich and well-drained soil.

Being of tropical origin, the rhizome does not tolerate heavy frost. In October, as the night time temperatures drop significantly, the foliage wilts and dries up. It will then be time to dig up the rhizomes, remove the surrounding soil, and store them in a cold (but frost-free) and dry place.
In April, place your rhizomes in crates, cover them with damp compost, and keep them in a well-lit area at a temperature of 15 to 20°C (59 to 68°F). The plants can then be replanted in the garden after the frost, having gained precious time for flowering.

Planting and care

Before sowing, soak the seeds of Canna indica 'T&M Hybrids' for 24 hours in a bowl of warm water. This will facilitate germination. Sow Canna indica in February in 12 cm (5in) pots. Use good quality soil that you will sieve on the surface to bind the seed to its substrate. Before sowing, lightly press the soil with a board. Sow your seeds to a depth of 1 cm (0.5in). Cover the seeds by sprinkling soil or vermiculite on top, lightly press and water generously with a fine rain. Place your pots in the light, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 20°C to 25°C. Lower the temperature at night to 20°C to create a beneficial alternation for germination.

Germination of the seeds will take 30 to 60 days. Keep the soil moist but not excessive during growth. Then, 15 days before their final placement, start gradually acclimating them to a temperature of 15°C.

By the end of May or early June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location. Add a good shovel of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 40 cm (16in) apart.

Regularly remove faded flowers to maintain beauty and promote renewal.
