Description

Heliopsis Golden Double Hybrids, also known as False Sunflower, is a tall perennial with summer flowering. Its upright stems are topped with large double and semi-double daisies of a beautiful golden yellow. Vigorous and robust, it is an excellent perennial plant for borders and also looks stunning in bouquets.

Native to North America, Heliopsis Golden Double Hybrids belongs to the Asteraceae family. Its name means 'resembling the sun'. Its large yellow flowers in heads, semi-double and double, are carried by sturdy and upright stems, with green dentate leaves. It has a clump-forming habit, reaching a height of 90 to 120 cm (35 to 47in) and a width of 60 cm (24in).

The False Sunflower is an easy-to-grow plant, with strong growth and will flower from the first year. It thrives in full sun and any fertile, well-drained soil that does not dry out too much in summer.

It will find its place in many gardens: in a mixed border in an English garden, as an edging plant in a cottage garden, or even in a meadow, alongside grasses, in a more naturalistic space. You can associate it with many other perennials such as Hollyhock, Purple Coneflower, or Agastaches.

Planting and care

Sow Heliopsis from February to June on the surface of a good seed compost and gently firm. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator (or enclose it in a polyethylene bag) or above a radiator, at a temperature of 18 to 25°C (64.4 to 77°F). Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Light aids germination, which typically takes 30 days.

When the young Heliopsis plants are large enough to handle, proceed with transplantation. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions until they are strong enough to be planted outdoors. Transplant into well-drained soil at a distance of 45 cm (18in).
