I really appreciated the explanations for sowing, I would have missed an important piece of information (3 weeks of cold) otherwise. Thank you for all your cultivation sheets.

Description

Lewisia cotyledon Galaxy Mixed, also known as Siskiyou Lewisia mix, brings together different cultivars and hybrids from a small, evergreen alpine perennial, native to the Rocky Mountains of North America. These are delightful rock garden plants that flower profusely in spring. Rising from a rosette of tough, fleshy leaves are clusters of small star-shaped flowers in vibrant shades of pink, red, salmon, or orange, depending on the plant. They only dislike the stagnant humidity of our winters around their taproots. Sow in spring in well-draining soil in full sun, or partial shade in warm climates.

Lewisias are plants of the Montiaceae family, recently reclassified from the purslane family. They are all native to the Rocky Mountains and were discovered in the early 19th century. They grow in small isolated populations in rocky crevices or gravelly scree slopes. Lewisia cotyledon is a perennial, evergreen, stemless succulent with a pivot root system. It readily hybridises and self-seeds in rocky terrain. The Galaxy Mixed blend brings together some magnificent forms with vibrant colours. These plants have a loose clumping habit, reaching about 25 cm (10in) in all directions, composed of glaucous succulent leaves that darken to greenish-red with cold temperatures. The leaves measure 5 to 15 cm (2 to 6in) long and are narrow and spatulate. Flowering occurs from March to June, depending on the climate. The flowers are about 3 cm (1in) in diameter, star-shaped with 7 to 12 shiny, slightly fringed petals in various colours. They are grouped in corymbs and close at night.

With its profusion of delicate and brightly coloured flowers, Lewisia cotyledon 'Galaxy Mixed' is a charming little plant that catches the eye. Whether in a border, a balcony planter, or perched on top of a wall, it is easy to find a special place, protected from winter wet for this little marvel.

Lewisias are also known as 'Bitter root' because their edible roots, covered in a bitter skin, were traditionally harvested by Native American tribes to be eaten once peeled and cooked, grilled, or dried, and even used as currency. It is said that a plant kept dry for five years is capable of regrowing to produce beautiful flowers the following summer. At least, that is according to a curious London botanist.

Planting and care

Sow Lewisia seeds from January to April.

It is essential to keep the seeds cold for 3 weeks: sow on the surface of good moist compost, in pots or trays. Cover with a thin layer of vermiculite. Enclose the seedlings in a polythene bag and place in the refrigerator (not the freezer) for 3 weeks. After this cold period, move the seedlings to 10-15°C (50-59°F) until germination, which can take 1 to 3 months. Regularly check the container and carefully transplant individual young plants when they are large enough to handle, into 7.5cm (3in) diameter pots or trays. If germination has not occurred during this period, repeat the cycle.

Grow the young plants under cold frames until planting out the following spring. Space the plants 30cm (12in) apart in well-drained, rich and light soil, containing plenty of gravel, or in pots, in full sun in cool regions, and partial shade further south.

Cultivation:

Lewisia cotyledon is a very hardy plant. The choice of location is crucial: the soil must be well-drained and fertile. In heavy soil, plant on a mound or add river sand and gravel to lighten the soil. Stagnant water around the roots of this plant would cause it to rot immediately. For pot planting, use a terracotta pot with drainage holes in the bottom. Create a layer of gravel or clay balls to aid the flow of water. The substrate should be composed of equal amounts of leaf mold, river sand and compost. Never let water stagnate in the saucer and allow the mix to dry almost completely between each watering. Apply liquid fertiliser every 15 days during the growth period. In the ground, fertiliser is unnecessary and may even be detrimental.

Plant Lewisia in full sun in cool climates, or in partial shade in warmer regions. To faithfully flower each year, this plant needs a cold season; do not bring your pots indoors during winter, but protect them from rain that could destroy the plants if it is abundant over a long period.
