Description

The Pink Tower Daisy is an annual plant with rapid growth, upright and branched stems, bushy, native to China. Its Latin name is Callistephus chinensis Pink Tower.

In its natural habitat, the Daisy or Chinese Aster thrives in fallow lands and uncultivated rocky slopes.

The flowers are a lovely white color marked with a soft pink. The solitary heads are 8 to 10 cm in diameter, composed of incurved ligulate florets, giving it the appearance of certain Chrysanthemums or Peonies. Its floral stems have good vase life, making it an ideal plant for creating colorful bouquets.

Its robust branched stems form a small bush that is 45 to 60 cm (23.6 in) tall and 30 cm (11.8 in) wide. Its slightly dentate oval leaves are dark green in color and alternate.

It is an easy-to-grow plant for flower beds and potted gardens, provided it is planted in a rich and well-drained soil. If the plant is not protected from strong winds, consider staking the bouquets.

Planting and care

Sow the Pink tower Marguerite Queen from March to April in a seed tray. Use good quality compost. Lightly press down the surface of the seed tray before sowing your seeds broadcast. Do not cover the seeds but water generously with a fine rain. Place your seed tray in a well-lit area, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 20°C to 30°C. Lower the temperature at night to 15°C to create a beneficial germination alternation.

Seed germination will take 7 to 21 days. As soon as the plants are manageable, transplant them into 7cm (2.8 in) pots. Then, 15 days before their final placement, gradually acclimate them to a temperature of 15°C.

By mid-May, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Add a good handful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 30cm (11.8 in) apart.

Regularly remove faded flowers to maintain beauty and promote renewal.

Fusarium wilt and powdery mildew are common diseases encountered in Marguerite Queens. To minimize their occurrence, avoid watering the foliage and plant Callistephus chinensis in well-drained soil. Avoid growing Marguerite Queens in the same location each year. Renew your seeds rather than harvesting those from flowers in your garden.

Monitor for aphids.
