Did not recover. Total disappointment, especially considering the rather expensive price.

More information

Often grown as an annual in our climate, the Cape primrose is a frost-tender perennial plant that forms rosettes of leaves similar to those of primroses and trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of white, blue, pink, mauve, or violet, with contrasting throats. If the growing conditions are met, these plants can flower almost all year round. They require a fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, and a partially shaded exposure.

Description

Often grown as an annual in our climate, Streptocarpus Dibleys Dragons Mixed, also known as the hybrid Cape primrose, is an exclusive and colourful mix that brings together high-performing and floriferous hybrids. These are frost-sensitive perennial plants that form rosettes of leaves similar to primroses and trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of white, blue, pink, mauve, or violet, with contrasting throats. If the growing conditions are met, these plants can flower almost year-round. They require a fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, and a semi-shaded exposure.

Hybrid Streptocarpus plants belong to the gesneriad family and are often derived from Streptocarpus rexii, a non-hardy South African perennial. In nature, this species grows on slopes or shady rocky cliffs, in moist and cool crevices. The Dibley Dragons Mixed produces rosette plants with large, entire, fuzzy, and undulate leaves measuring 20 to 30cm (8 to 12in) in length and 4 to 6cm (2in) in width, in a medium green shade. The rosettes reach a height of 25 to 35cm (10 to 14in) and a width of 30cm (12in). Flowering is almost continuous in mature plants grown under optimal conditions, with regular removal of faded flowers. The 5-petalled flowers, large in proportion to the size of the plant, are presented in tubular or flared trumpets, delicately and vividly coloured, almost as refined as orchids. Depending on the plants, they can be white, pale or bright pink, soft blue or bluish-violet, mauve or violet, and display a white throat splashed with red, violet, or purple, contrasting well with the corolla.

Streptocarpus Dibley Dragons Mixed are beautiful indoor plants that can create a stunning cameo. They thrive in cool and semi-shaded environments. In containers or hanging baskets, these plants provide decoration for a good part of the year and enjoy spending the summer on the terrace, in the shade. They can be paired with gloxinias, but Streptocarpus is generally grown alone as it is a plant that stands out and should be admired up close.

Attention, seeds reserved for highly experienced gardeners who are accustomed to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow Streptocarpus seeds from February to May.

Be careful, as the seeds are as fine as dust. To open the package, position yourself above a white sheet of paper, cut along the three sides of the package inside the seed pouch, and carefully open it flat. Tap the package gently to dislodge the seeds. Sow on the surface of moist compost, in pots or trays. Do not cover the seeds. Place in a propagator or a warm location and keep at a temperature of around 24-27°C (75.2-80.6°F). After sowing, do not exclude light as it is necessary for germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 21 to 60 days.

When the plants are sufficiently developed, transplant them into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays. These non-hardy plants appreciate partial shade and a humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Regularly remove faded flowers to prevent plant exhaustion and encourage reblooming. These plants are hungry for fertiliser and will need repotting when they become less floriferous. They are vulnerable to stagnant moisture, which makes them susceptible to botrytis, and to dry air, which promotes attacks by red spiders. Avoid wetting the foliage during watering.
