Description

Alstroemeria River Valley is a new variety of Peruvian Lily that is particularly compact and robust, resistant to bad weather, and equally at home in the garden as it is in flower pots. It maintains a neat appearance throughout the season and blooms for months. Its colourful pink flowers, with yellow throats striped with dark brown, are perfectly highlighted by slightly white-creamy to pale yellow-edged foliage. This less hardy perennial plant is easy to grow as an annual and requires very little maintenance. It is simply perfect for borders or balconies.

Alstroemeria River Valley is a recent Dutch variety resulting from the hybridization of several tuberous species native to South America, particularly the Chilean Andes. These high-altitude plants belonging to the Alstroemeriaceae family are more or less hardy, appreciate moist, well-drained soils, in lightly wooded and cool areas. Slow to establish, they can disappear or... become invasive! Quirky and fantastic plants, very sensitive to growing conditions, they are "indestructible" once you have found the right spot for them.

'River Valley' belongs to the Valley collection associated with the Summer Paradise alstroemeria series, selected for their hardiness and floribundity. The 'Valley' Peruvian Lilies are more compact than the Summer Paradise ones. This River variety quickly forms clumps of sturdy, leafy stems that do not exceed 35 cm (14in) in height when in bloom, with a spread of 30-35 cm. Flowering takes place from June to October-November. The open flowers are gathered in terminal umbels. They consist of 3 small central petals, pink-fuchsia with yellow spots at the base, streaked with brown-purple, surrounded by 3 larger petals of the same vibrant pink. The foliage is arranged on the upper part of the stems. The leaves of this variety display an elegant dark green colour irregularly edged with cream. The foliage and stems disappear in winter, leaving only the trailing stump with fleshy roots underground. The stump is sensitive to the shock of transplantation, especially in older plants.

Alstroemeria 'River Valley' is an excellent variety for the garden. This exceptional perennial, when mature, creates a magnificent spectacle at the edge of flower beds or on a partially shaded slope. This plant pairs well, for example, with other varieties from the Summer Paradise series (Summer Break, Indian Summer, Summertime...), shrubby salvias with orange blooms, or grasses; Stipa, small Miscanthus, or Muhlenbergia capillaris will accompany its autumn colours with their foliage and magnificent late-season blooms. One can also plant Ceratostigma plumbaginoides next to it, with intensely blue flowers and red foliage in October. A marvel! Pot cultivation is also highly recommended.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered location (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

Alstroemerias should be planted in spring, choosing a sunny or semi-shade location, in a light, well-drained, well-prepared soil, preferably sandy or loamy and slightly acidic to neutral, and not too fertile. While they appreciate moistre to support their flowering, they adapt quite well to dry soils in summer.  These plants are quite hardy if the soil does not remain waterlogged in winter. The stump can be protected with a thick mulch of leaves or fern fronds in autumn. Slugs (and turtles) love young shoots; make sure to protect them.
