Description

Tagetes erecta nana F1 Taishan Mix in a mix of colours brings together different cultivars of selected Tagetes erecta nan for their very compact habit, very dense flower heads, and excellent performance in beds and pots. Each plant forms a small, well-branched clump from the base and is adorned with large radiant pom-pom flowers throughout the summer and into the first frosts. They are incredibly easy to grow and suitable for all gardeners, as these annual plants thrive and flower even in poor and dry soil. The qualities of the 'Taishan' Indian Roses led to their special selection for landscaping during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The 'Taishan' selection of Tagetes erecta nan F1 are herbaceous and frost-tender perennial plants, cultivated as annuals in most climates. These plants belong to the aster family and are of horticultural origin, derived from, among others, a wild species paradoxically named African Marigold, native to Mexico, Central America, and the western part of South America. Each plant quickly forms a small, well-branched bushy clump from the base, which is regular and measures 30 cm (12in) in all directions. The sturdy angular stems bear large double flowers, 8 cm (3in) in diameter, at the top, resembling big fluffy pom-poms with a geometric pattern reminiscent of beehives. Their very dense structure offers little resistance to rain. Depending on the plants, the flowers are golden yellow, bright yellow, bright orange, or a mix of yellow and orange. The 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4in) long leaves are deeply cut and contain an essential oil with medicinal properties, characterised by a scent reminiscent of citrus fruits, pepper, or even apple.

Thanks to their easy cultivation, Indian Roses are star plants in summer beds, borders, and summer containers. The strong stems allow for beautiful summer displays that last a long time in a vase. The vibrant 'Taishan' flowers can be beautifully combined with blue, white, or apricot flowers. They can also be planted in small clusters amidst the grey foliage of artemisias and stachys, with bronze fennel, or surrounded by greenery, by combining them with tansies, Kochia Childsii, or small ornamental grasses that will soften their large double pom-poms. Indian Roses are edible, and their petals can be added to summer salads to enhance flavour and add colour.

Indian Roses are also medicinal and dye plants, from which an essential oil and a yellow food colouring can be extracted. The scent of the foliage and the substances secreted by their roots repel certain pests, particularly nematodes, which is why these plants are often grown among vegetables in the vegetable garden.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, repot and store them in a sheltered location (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Marigolds are fast-growing plants that thrive in the sun and in hot conditions, even in poor and occasionally dry soils. Plant them in well-drained, light, and well-loosened soil. Avoid excessive watering in summer, as it promotes the development of fungal diseases and root rot. Regularly remove faded flowers to prolong flowering. Protect the plants from slugs and snails, which are fond of them.
