Description

Salvia splendens Estella White is an annual sage when grown in our climates, also known as bright sage or splendid sage. This variety, awarded an Approved Novelty by Fleuroselect in 2023, stands out for its colour for this type, its large size on a well-branched young plant, and for its quick-flowering. It offers a long flowering in dense spikes adorned with cream-white flowers on a backdrop of dark green leaves. Standing at 60 cm tall, it fits well in perennial beds as well as adorning large pots. Plant in full sun, in moist, light, well-drained soil.

Salvia splendens is a herbaceous plant of the Lamiaceae family, originating from the hot and humid regions of Brazil, between 2000 and 3000 m above sea level. Sometimes reaching 1.30 m in its homeland, it forms an upright clump of stems 30 cm high and 25 cm wide in one season in our climates. The Estella White variety stands out for its height exceeding that of usual cultivars, as it reaches 60 cm in height by 50 cm wide in one season. Its four-angled stems are branched and erect. Its leaves cling to them along their entire length, they are oval to lanceolate, toothed and dark green. The flower spikes rise above the foliage, from July to October. The tubular flowers are a very bright cream-white, offering a wonderful contrast with the foliage.

The bright sage Estella White can be planted as a border or in a bed in the garden for a quick flowering, scattered in small groups among other plants with complementary colours. It blooms profusely, even when summer perennials are resting. Pair it with grey-leaved plants like wormwoods or flowering plants like blue delphiniums, ground cover roses, daylilies for example, all capable of complementing its intensity. It also performs very well in containers, to adorn terraces, balconies, and planters.

Planting and care

Sow Estella White in warmth from March to May, on the surface of a good seed compost. Ensure the compost is moist but not waterlogged and seal in a polythene bag until germination, which usually takes 15 days at 18-25 °C. Expose the young plants to light, which is beneficial for germination. Transplant when the plants are large enough to handle into 8 cm pots and let them grow in cooler conditions. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting in the garden, after all risk of frost has passed, spacing them 30 cm apart, in a sunny location in well-worked soil.
