Description

Salvia splendens Reddy™ Bright Red is grown as an annual sage in our climates, also known as brilliant sage or splendid sage. This variety is part of the Reddy series which offers high-quality, well-branched, and very floriferous cultivars in vibrant colours. It presents a long flowering period with dense spikes adorned with flowers in a scarlet red hue against a backdrop of dark green leaves. Standing at only 15 cm tall, it forms a small, rounded, and vigorous bush from the start. It fits well in borders, containers, and pots. Plant it in a sunny spot, in moist, light, and well-drained soil.

Salvia splendens is a herbaceous plant from the Lamiaceae family, originating from the hot and humid regions of Brazil, between 2000 and 3000 m above sea level. While it can reach 1.30 m in its native habitat, it forms an upright clump of stems 30 cm tall and 25 cm wide in our climate within a season. The Reddy™ Bright Red variety reaches 15 cm in height and 20 cm in width in one season. Its four-angled stems are branched and erect. Its leaves attach along the entire length, they are ovate to lanceolate, toothed, and dark green. The flower spikes rise above the foliage from July to October. The tubular flowers are scarlet red, providing a wonderful contrast with the foliage.

The brilliant sage Reddy Bright Red can be planted in beds in the garden for a quick flowering display, scattered in small groups among other plants with complementary colours. It blooms profusely, even when summer perennials are taking a break. Pair it with grey-leaved plants like wormwoods or flowering plants such as blue delphiniums, ground cover roses, daylilies, for example, all capable of complementing its intensity. It also performs very well in containers, decorating terraces and balconies.

Planting and care

Sow Reddy Bright Red seeds in warmth from March to May, on the surface of a good sowing compost. Ensure the compost is moist but not waterlogged and seal in a polythene bag until germination, which usually takes 15 days at 18-25 °C. Expose the young plants to light, which is beneficial for germination. Transplant when the plants are large enough to handle into 8 cm pots and let them grow in cooler conditions. Acclimatise them gradually to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting in the garden, after all risk of frost has passed, spacing them 30 cm apart, in a sunny location in well-worked soil.
