More information

A series of early and compact young plants, with a good shape thanks to good branching. With its vibrant colours and good floribundity, this variety offers a contrasting mix of dark pink, very dark purple, and cream-white annual salvias, on dark green foliage. Beneath this small, rounded habit lies dense, sturdy, and vigorous branching from the start. To be planted in the sun, in borders or containers, in moist, light, and well-drained soil.

Description

Salvia splendens Reddy is grown as an annual sage in our climates, also known as brilliant sage or splendid sage. The Nero Mixture mix brings together Reddy series varieties that offer high-quality, well-branched, and very floriferous cultivars in vibrant colours. This one offers an intense mix of colours: cream white, dark pink, and dark purple for a long flowering in dense spikes on a backdrop of dark green leaves. Standing at only 15 cm tall, it forms a small, round, and vigorous bush from germination. It fits well in borders, planters, and pots. Plant in the sun, in moist, light, and well-drained soil.

Salvia splendens is a herbaceous plant in the Lamiaceae family, native to the warm and humid regions of Brazil, between 2000 and 3000 m above sea level. Sometimes reaching 1.30 m in its home country, it forms, under our climate, within one season, an upright clump of stems 30 cm high and 25 cm wide. The ReddyNero Mixture reaches 15 cm in height and 20 cm in width in one season. Its four-angled stems are branched and erect. Its leaves cling to them along their entire length, they are ovate to lanceolate, toothed, dark green. The flower spikes rise above the foliage from July to October. The tubular flowers provide a wonderful contrast with the foliage.

The brilliant sage Reddy Nero Mixture can be planted in a border in the garden for quick flowering, scattered in small groups among other plants with complementary colours. It blooms profusely, even when summer perennials are resting. Pair it with grey-leaved plants like wormwoods or flowering plants like blue delphiniums, ground cover roses, daylilies for example, all capable of complementing its intensity. It also performs very well in pots, to adorn terraces, balconies, and planters.

Planting and care

Sow the Reddy Nero Mixture seeds indoors from March to May, on the surface of a good seed compost. Ensure the compost is moist but not waterlogged and seal in a polythene bag until germination, which usually takes 15 days at 18-25 °C. Expose the young plants to light, which is beneficial for germination. Transplant when the young plants are large enough to handle into 8 cm pots and let them grow in cooler conditions. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting in the garden, after all risk of frost has passed, spacing them 30 cm apart, in a sunny location in well-worked soil.
