Description

The Anthemis or Argyranthemum Grandaisy 'Ruby' is a brand new variety that stands out for its good resistance to diseases, cold and wet weather, and heat, which allows it to acclimatise in most of our regions where it will flower for 5-6 months, until the first frost. Its radiant flowers are similar to bright red-orange daisies, with an almost black centre surrounded by a yellow ring. They tirelessly bloom on a small, ramified bush. Easy to grow, it is an ideal variety for large flowering pots, but also for rockeries or flower beds.

The Argyranthemum Grandaisy Ruby is a recent horticultural hybrid belonging to the Asteraceae family. The Grandaisy series ®, developed in the Netherlands, is characterised by large inflorescences and undeniable ease of cultivation. It brings together perennial but not very hardy varieties, commonly grown as annuals. They are beautiful ornamentals with a long flowering period that require little maintenance. The 'Ruby' selection will reach 45 to 55 cm (21.7 in) in all directions. Its growth is very rapid. The abundant flowering lasts from May-June to October, even more generously if you regularly remove faded flowers. The head-like flowers resemble red daisies, 6 cm (2.4 in) wide, with a dark centre delicately surrounded by yellow, making them extremely bright. The stems are highly branched, with bipinnately lobed leaves, forming a very abundant decorative foliage that is greenish-blue, aromatic when crushed, and very light in appearance. It remains evergreen in winter if the plant is kept frost-free.

Sun lovers par excellence, anthemis dislike excess humidity in winter more than anything else. In climates unaffected by frost, plant them in well-drained, slightly acidic, neutral, or strongly calcareous soil. Forming beautiful, rounded and fully blooming clumps in a very short time, this 'Ruby' selection is superb when planted alongside fennel, perennial flax, borage, cosmos, or blue and white nigellas. Like all annuals, it can be very useful for starting a brand new garden after construction work. It can be planted in wildflower meadows, as well as in more meticulously maintained flower beds, rockeries, staircase borders, or along a path in a steep garden. And of course, it offers a fantastic spectacle in flowering pots, in the company of Dichondra 'Silver Falls', Begonia sempervirens, Ageratums, or dwarf snapdragons, on the terrace or balcony.

Note: Attention, our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (sunroom, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

The cultivation of Argyranthemum in pots is easy in all regions. Plant the Anthemis in a light and fertile substrate, composed of potting soil and sand, enriched with a bit of compost. Drainage is important, and watering should be abundant but spaced out, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Potted plants can be overwintered in a bright and well-ventilated area, but with very little heating to keep the plants frost-free.

As true sun enthusiasts, anthemis are particularly wary of excessive humidity, especially in winter. In mild climates, they can be planted in the ground, in well-drained soil that is slightly acidic, neutral, or strongly alkaline to very alkaline. These plants are not very demanding when it comes to soil quality. However, in heavy soil, their lifespan is shorter than in poor and rather dry soil. Their cold resistance is greater when the soil is dry. Pruning the stems to 20 cm (7.9 in) above the ground in early September or in spring promotes the reconstitution of clumps and, at the end of the season, a slight rebloom.
