Begonia 'Dragon Wing Pink' brings the pink colour to this excellent series of annual begonias 'Dragon Wing', with 'angel wings' leaves. Spectacular, the plant is always covered with bright coral pink flowers, regardless of the weather. Its large clusters of single flowers are placed on healthy winged leaves, sporting a very bright green shade. This bushy and vigorous variety brings a very exotic note to pots, containers, or large hanging baskets. It withstands the midday sun and intense heat, blooms in the shade, but prefers semi-shaded situations.
Â
The Begonia 'Dragon Wing Pink' is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant, grown as an annual, belonging to the Begoniaceae family. It is derived from Begonia seperflorens, an hybrid between two species native to Brazil. This variety is part of a series of sterile hybrids obtained in 1997, and selected for their good sun and heat resistance, their vigour, as well as for their sensational foliage. 'Dragon Wing Pink' has tender and fleshy stems, covered with thick, leathery, oblong, cordate leaves, of a beautiful dark green colour, shiny, about 6 cm (2.4 in) in length, giving a sense of luxuriance. This highly branched plant will quickly reach 30 to 40 cm (15.7 in) in height and 30 to 40 cm (15.7 in) in diameter. Appearing in May-June and present until the first frosts, its abundant flowers are simple, cup-shaped, composed of 4 rounded petals, of a very cheerful pink. They are gathered in cascading clusters. The plant tolerates temporary drought quite well. Its sterile flowers fade and fall naturally, reducing maintenance to a minimum.
Â
This Begonia is ideal for full sun, but can also be placed in partial shade. Placed in a semi-shaded to shaded exposure, it will show its full potential; placed in a sunny location, it will be more compact, develop smaller leaves that will take on a coppery or reddish colouration. It can be used in flower beds, in pots, large flower pots, but also to create large hanging baskets, mixed with black-leaved ipomoeas for example. It is sometimes forgotten, but annual begonias can be used to hide a fence, fill an empty area, or accompany a shrub lacking colour. The 'Dragon Wing' begonias go well with plants with light foliage and flowers, such as lobelias, bacopas, bidens, but also with petunias. In a more exotic spirit, a colourful flower bed can be created by combining them with cannas, castor oil plants, or Hedychiums. Finally, it is good to know that there are hardy begonias, such as Begonia grandis.

Botanical data
The Begonia 'Dragon Wing Pink' blooms from May until the first frost. It is placed in a well-drained, fertile, humus-rich, and light soil (a good special geranium compost, for example), moist but not waterlogged, in full sun, partial shade, or even in shade. Choose large containers, and maintain a minimum spacing of 50 cm (19.7 in) in mass planting. The plant needs warmth to develop well and is extremely tolerant to high temperatures. It also withstands drought very well, and if you happen to forget to water it, even in the middle of summer, its growth and flowering will be reduced, while its leaves will turn a very light green colour. When watering resumes, it will restart growth without any problem. Provide moderate watering (it does not tolerate excess water, especially in spring and autumn!) and frequent fertiliser application for intense flowering. During the growing season, it is useful to provide flowering plant fertiliser every week. Beware of snails and slugs that love to devour young plants. This variety is resistant to fungal diseases. The Begonia is frost-sensitive and cannot withstand freezing temperatures.
Attention: The Dragon Wing begonia does not survive indoors.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
