Description

Begonia semperflorens 'Super Olympia White' is a new variety of annual begonia with a bushy and compact habit supported by dense and vigorous vegetation that withstands bad weather well. On this white-flowered version the small corollas are arranged around a small yellow heart; flowers are single or double, and grouped in clusters on round and shiny bright green foliage. Like all semperflorens hybrids, this variety flowers continuously until the first frost. It prefers shade or partial shade.

The 'Super Olympia White' Begonia is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant, grown as an annual, belonging to the begonia family. It comes from Begonia semperflorens, an hybrid between two species native to Brazil. This variety is part of a series of recent hybrids selected for their compact, vigorous and bushy habit and their floriferousness. 'Super Olympia White' has stout and fleshy stems covered with tough, rounded leaves of a beautiful fresh green colour, shiny, about 5 cm (2 in) in length. This highly branched plant will quickly reach 20 cm (7.9 in) in all directions. Appearing in May-June and present until the first frost, its abundant flowers are asymmetrical, cup-shaped, composed of rounded, white petals arranged around a small yellow heart and grouped in axillary clusters. They are gathered in numerous terminal bouquets.

This Begonia is ideal for illuminating shady areas. It can be used in flowerbeds, planters, hanging baskets or large pots. 'Super Olympia' Begonias make very beautiful ground cover in a mix of varieties. They go well with plants with light foliage and flowers, such as lobelias, annual pennisetums, bacopas, bidens, but also with petunias. The 'Super Olympia White' Begonia will complement a white garden whose blooms tend to decline in summer. It is also good to be aware that there are hardy begonia varities, such as Begonia grandis.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, frame) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before planting outside once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Begonia 'Super Olympia White' flowers from May until the first frost. Place in well-drained, fertile, humus-rich and light soil, moist but not waterlogged, in shade or partial shade. Moderate watering is required (it cannot tolerate excess water!) and frequent fertilisation for intense flowering - ideally every week during the growing season. Beware of snails and slugs that love to devour the young plants. Begonia semperflorens can be susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. Begonias are frost-sensitive plants and will not tolerate subzero temperatures. They are often grown in containers that can be easily brought indoors into greenhouses or heated conservatories at the first signs of frost. If you grow them in the ground, remove the tubers from the soil and store them in a crate covered with newspaper, in a sheltered place, until the following spring.
