Description

The Begonia 'Sunbrero Red' is a small, bushy plant that bears large, double flowers, a beautiful bright red, lovely like roses. They appear from May onwards and continue until the frosts, enhanced by its lobed foliage of a dark, glossy green. The Begonia 'Sunbrero' can be planted from April, in partial shade or even in the sun, in borders as well as in pots. It requires little maintenance.

The Begonia 'Sunbrero Red' is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant (it perishes below -4°C (24.8°F)), grown as an annual, belonging to the begonia family. It is derived from the Begonia semperflorens, a hybrid between two species native to Brazil. 'Sunbrero' has sturdy, fleshy stems, covered with tough, rounded leaves with undulate edges, of a beautiful dark green colour veined with light green, shiny, about 5 cm (2in) long. This ramified plant with an upright habit will quickly reach 30 cm (12in) in all directions. Its flowers are composed of multiple rounded petals arranged around a small, tight heart. Begonias are monoecious and bear flowers with exclusively male attributes (single flowers) and others female (double flowers). They are gathered in numerous terminal clusters.

The Begonia Sunbrero Red is used in flower beds, in tubs, balcony planters, or in large flowering pots. The Begonias in this Sunbrero series form very beautiful borders, in a mix of varieties, in both sun and partial shade. For a flower bed planting, plan for approximately 10 plants per square meter. They go well with light foliage and flower plants, such as lobelias, annual pennisetums, bacopas, bidens, as well as petunias. In a more exotic spirit, a colorful scene can be created by associating the Begonia with cannas or Hedychiums. Finally, it is good to know that there are hardy begonias, like the Begonia grandis.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being placed outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively removed.

Planting and care

The 'Sumbrero Red' Begonia blooms early and for a long time, from May until the first frost. It is placed in a well-drained, fertile, humus-rich and light soil, moist but not waterlogged, in full sun or partial shade. Excess moisture makes it susceptible to diseases. Water moderately (it cannot tolerate excess water!) and provide frequent fertilization for intense flowering. During the growing season, it is helpful to provide flowering plant fertilizer every week. Beware of snails and slugs that love to devour young plants. The Semperflorens Begonia can be susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. Begonias are sensitive to cold temperatures, so they do not tolerate freezing temperatures. For this reason, they are often grown in containers that can be easily brought indoors to greenhouses or heated verandas at the first signs of frost.
